So anyway I have a new location to trap as seven ducks got killed 2 nights ago . It seems either a coon or a large mink got into a pen and killed 7 of 9 younguns spared the mother duck. The pen only had 2x4 inch 11ga wire which was bent completely open to make a 4in round hole. My ist thought was coon but the only track I see is from a good sized mink. The owner want me to live trap and relocate everything . Most of my mink trapping has been with coni's .Will mink readily go into a small havahart trap? my thought was to put one where it went thru the fence. Any advice ? Sarcastic remarks ?

If all you can use are cage traps, set a raccoon sized cage. That way you can catch any skunks and raccoons too.

The only word that bothered me was "small" Havahart. I am hoping you meant one that a skunk might get into? sqs had a good answer, if it will fit.

Mink I use fresh un cooked shrimp in cage traps summer time . Must be ready to get it relocated quick mink over heat quick or maybe stress out but don't do well in the back of the truck . I've never lost one but came close one time . Got it to the river it took off good . Sounds like basic mistake buying ducks before a good pen is built . Pen should Come first . Chances are that mink won't be back for a week but he will return

Pesky right, if it's a big buck, seven to ten days would be normal. I call this period "nervous customer" time.

I went back and looked again. I saw where an area of grass was matted down too big to be from a mink. I'm thinking it was coon doing the killing and then a mink came by for leftovers . This farm is between a beaver pond and a swamp with a stream connecting the 2 going right thru the farm. I thought I had a lot of traps but now I'm not so sure. Now everything is catch and release .lol.
