I wanted to know what you guys think would be the best way to go here. I have 20 to 30 bats that have made their way into an attic. In the attic the old chimney caved in and most of it was tore out. It was replaced with an outside stainless chimney 30 yrs ago. The new chimney leads in to the old one and the bats are coming in the top of the stainless chimney dropping down to where it ties into the old one and coming up through the attic floor where the old chimney was. Thought of excluding them from the top of the newer stainless chimney, but its 3 floors up on a steep metal roof and I'm no mountain goat lol.I also thought of screening the big hole in the floor with an excluder, You thoughts please

First off it isnt a good time to evict bats. Juveniles around here arent flight ready as of yet and you would most likely trap them in the house separating them from the adult females causing potential back flow into the house. And with that many bats it is most likely a maternal colony.

You need to exclude the bats from the external entry/exiting points on the exterior of the home.

Right on Bob. Are the bats entering and exiting the home in 2 different places? It would be tough for them to climb out of a stainless steel tube that is verticle.

I explained to the people that were in the window for adults raising young and they were good with waiting, but I was just trying to come up with a game plan. There is an old hatch in the roof that I think I could work with to get on the roof, it was sealed but I think I can use that to get to the top of the stainless chimney. Dave, the chimney looks like its lined with some type of insulate. The one problem is the hatch is within feet of where the bats are, be tough to work there without scattering them, what do ya think?

You do it all from the outside.

Do several bat watches to determine exact points the bats are using. I can't begin to count how many times I've been told, "this is where they come out of" to find the actual entrance 6 inches to 30 feet away.

As for the roof, this is what lifts and ridge hooks are made for. Start with making sure you can get a lift into the work site then price it into the job. If there is too much landscaping in the way, then look at using ridge hooks to access the roof.

RW - some pics always help a bit with folks seeing exactly what you are talking about. I have a buddy who fabricates all kinds of gear via welding.

Sometimes I know and can follow his exact story to get a mental picture, but sometimes I have to tell him to take a pic or send me a drawing.

Just a thought, you might get a bit tighter info on the exact structural question you have that way. Good points though presented on what you've asked already.
