Goosebuster! Hobby helicopter chases nuisance birds off Ottawa beach
By Jon Willing, QMI Agency
es

Steve Wambolt of Aerial Perspectives is the city's new Goosebuster, using a remote controlled helicopter to clear Petrie Island of pest birds such as geese and seagulls Tuesday, August 20, 2013. It's part of a $30,000 pilot project by the City of Ottawa. Darren Brown/ QMI Agency/Ottawa Sun

OTTAWA - Orleans Coun. Bob Monette is calling in air support to chase pooping geese from Petrie Island beach.

Goosebuster, an offshoot branch of Aerial Perspective photography, is patrolling the city beach with a six-propeller remote-controlled hobby helicopter scaring away nuisance birds.

Steve Wambolt was trying to sell the city his aerial photography services last May, but Monette suggested using the helicopters to scare geese instead.

Wambolt received the necessary wildlife and operating permits and started buzzing the beach last month.

"Nothing can go up and challenge the birds like this can," Wambolt said Tuesday morning, before piloting a chopper toward an unsuspecting mass of gulls at Petrie.

City parks GM Dan Chenier said the Goosebuster seems to be working better than past bird-shooing techniques, such as dogs and loud sounds.

Kermit, don't send this story to Obama. He'll say that's why he has drones all over our airspace; to haze birds! Come to think of it, drones would probably do a great job of hazing. ( Especially with nuclear warheads )
