I NEEDED a portable skinning rig. So beings that I'm a farm boy and have farm things handy. We made up a nice unit that doubles as a skinning table for opening coon, and mounted a winch on it. Simply turned an old feed bunk, into a great asset to my fur shed. I know the vice grip skinning machine method is quite popular, although, after seeing k9's "roller system" and the simplicity of it, I went with that! Works great. All the coon I've caught in the last 2 days skinned. A pallet of carcass's being air shipped in the morning to West Virginia.

I should add, we put 600 lbs of tractor weights on the bunk to hold it down. It still rocks a bit though.

The longest part of skinning the coon is opening them up and getting past the tail, after that, it's a minute or 2 on the winch pull out the front legs, go to the ears, eyes, nose, and done.
If I had someone else opening them for me, and I was just pulling skinning a pile of coon would be a breeze in my opinion.

Just a hoist from Harbor Freight.
Roller is nice, no vice grips to deal with.

Feeding Cathryn and her children all winter of course! I thought she only ate possums! I guess I'm not understanding the roller part. How is the pelt held onto the roller? Do you roll the roller when you are pulling? Or are you pulling with the winch? Ed

Attach your gambrel to a winch. Hang the coon on there, like you normally would when skinning. Take the tail, and rear end of the coon, and roll it up tight. Pull up on the winch, until you get to the arms, put in a wooden dowel or piece of rebar to pull out the arms, them skin them out like normal.
Saves the wear and tear on your body from pulling coon.
