Got a fox call today, the owner said she has seen 2 of them and they have been killing her chickens...she said someone told her to put bacon grease on sponges and when they eat the bacon flavored sponge that they cannot pass it.She said it has not worked so she called me.
Has anyone ever heard of that? That was a new one on me.

Not heard that one either...Not quite sure how it cannot past the GI tract of a fox if it gets swallowed.

I have heard that for birds and rodents. Also I think I heard somebody mention something like that for wolves.

I think first the fox has to eat a mole that has recently chewed on some Juicy Fruit gum.

Yeah, I've heard of it. But it can't be just any sponge. It's a certain type of sponge and I don't remember if it was natural or man made.

Very illegal! Very unethical. I'd never recommend it.

It has to be a natural sponge. Remember we need to go green or the world will end. And we don't want to kill them with cancer either.

The amount of crap that people are willing to stick outside to allow anything to ingest shows how low the bar is for intelligence. If I had a nickel for every fool who mentioned they just wanted a simple poison they could put in a dish filled with water in an urban area to kill pigeons I'd be a rich man.

Even when you explain the harmful nature of this, and how they could end up killing any species of wildlife or domestic animal or even in some cases endangering kids they honestly don't seem to get it.

This is probably one of those topics that should be like dispatch, because folks are always trolling the internet looking for fodder to use as their new technique and now this is there and someone will use it.

mad

Irritating and unnecessary!

Maybe if she's duct tapes the sponges on her chickens first might get more result might try soaking sponge with chicken noodle soup as well . I guess what really gets me is people raising birds then not building a good pen before even getting there birds . Next thing they know every bird is gone and they blame the fox or owls for there failure as a bird farmer . I can half way understand if raccoons are getting in because a hot fence is needed for them things if they really want in but fox or hawks owl are simple to keep out of your pens .

They have been raising them for 37 years....they have a well built pen...but they let them run around during the day...all are put in at night...never a problem till now...the fox got them during the daylight hours.

Free range is where most folks have gone or are going with reasonable sized flocks. Good friends of ours in northern lower michigan kept seeing coyotes during the day back when we first met them some 15 years ago. They were losing chickens even though the penned them in a good enclosure at night. Turned out there were two red fox coming in that weren't ever seen until the control started. Of course I've got plenty of calls here, where same thing, penned at night, killing happens during the day and it is wiley coyote doing the work over the top of the 6' "coyote fence" as they call it out here. Free range is hard to defend without just expecting losses and to have to hire control folks when they get too much to manage.

Let me know if anybody comes up with the idea of free range lobster. I'm melting the butter already.
