Tried the search for "peacock" and "peacocks" and didn't return anything though I believe its been discussed on some threads.

Have a request to provide peacock population management for a neighborhood (not my usual request, but interesting) and know that some of you guys have done some capture and removal.

Thoughts?

Their goal is reduction of flock size and they'd like them caught humanely, so options that fall under that umbrella are what I'm looking for. Apparently in a rare spin, the whole neighborhood is in unison on this.

Peafowl in my state have no protection but if you are wanting to do it humanely I would look in to rocket netting them

Peefowl are smart,,,,, worked once for me on two groups of birds numbering 13 ttl

You will need to hit them hard "when" you start trapping.......

I think it was you Vinke that had mentioned before about their clever nature. That is my primary concern. I grew up with a couple on the farm, but we didn't catch them, eventually feral dogs did and no more peacocks after that.

Brad, I definitely favor nets where possible and available. I don't own any currently but have used them for ducks, geese, turkeys and deer in the past.

Vinke, is that bottom picture a large repeating trap setup? How long are you pre-baiting before getting a good capture?

Starting from scratch on this one other than knowing what they look like and of course what they sound like!

I'm meeting with her on Friday, will shout at you tomorrow. Not sure what their budget is yet for this, but I'm curious either way.

I've had to net them ,,,chase and run method ... Trap them with a hide and pull string method, baited with mealy worms and have had to go as far as using a tranquilizer dart gun...

Joe, I've got a good pull string story about some young feral hogs in a residential neighborhood... Felt like the kid with a box and a carrot and string waiting to catch the rabbit!

It did however work!

I have handled a few with large landing nets using mirrors and corn . They love a good fight and will respond well to a large mirror.

Well good luck first thing you'll learn is only the house there roosting on will wish them gone . Catching part is the easy part

Hey, I grew up with peacocks. ( Well, actually they were a little over a mile away but with peacocks that's just like growing up with them ) The nice thing about peacocks is that the people that hired you to get rid of them will eventually let you use any method available, up to and including nuclear war!

Wink, here in the Rio Grande Valley there are lots of feral guinea hens, peacocks, turkeys and a variety of other fowl.
We also have "wild horses" in some of the towns on the outskirts of Albuquerque that are always in question regarding
welfare, management, possibilities of lawsuits against the county should one be hit on the highway after issues were
already known.

Needless to say these all reveal "opportunity" for assisting in mgmt, some more than others. I've had feral rooster
calls that we opted out of, they were crowing every morning (imagine that! lol!) and driving the residents nuts.

This time I figured if we are talking a whole neighborhood HOA this is worth a look and variety is the spice of life!

Shiney bumper on a new car would work best.

Don't forget that for some strange reason, peafowl are actually quite valuable. Interesting birds, very slow maturing, but long lived. Could be worth it to look into marketing options after capture. I would think that mirrors, strange peacocks etc. would make excellent bait but only for males. Females and juveniles will be the tricky ones.

Andy, the one that I caught was known about by a lot of people and no one was breaking down my door to buy it, including the owner. My thought on owning peafowl is that the first time you are trying to get some sleep and that avian alarm clock goes off, you will strangle that bird with your bare hands.

I once read an article in Sports Afield that peacock hunting in Africa with a shotgun was quite sporting. That would be one of the few ways that I would enjoy seeing a peacock. ( I would cheat and use buckshot )

P.S. Don't quote me on this but if I remember correctly there are several parts of Milwaukee county that outlaw peafowl. And that is only because they have had experiences with them.

Andy, they have a few folks with farms that are willing to take the part of the flock they'd like to reduce, which was my first concern as they
want a "humane" reduction and I was thinking I was going to have to explain that I can't relocate them anywhere except private farms in this case.

Apparently the folks I'm speaking with were the hold out in the HOA, everyone else has long gotten the idea that 20 was too many.

Yep, that's where mine went too. ( I can only assume that the people who own that farm have a worse sense of hearing than I do, which would mean they are deaf )
