Your thoughts. Do you install them, do you replace doors to get rid of them.

There are many types of pet entry doors on the market, and they come in many sizes and offer many features but one feature allowing just your pets in is by far the most important feature to consider when selecting a pet entry door.

Pet doors allow your dog or cat the convenience of going outdoors with having to get off the the couch or out of bed at odd hours to simply allow them to relieve themselves as you trained them with out human intervention. Pet doors prevent accidents on floors and furniture and give your pet and you freedom.

If a dog or cat can enter your home so can a raccoon, possum, rat mouse or squirrel. Selecting the right door is the key. This can be an entire door unit, or simply a pet door.

Anyone have any experience with Pet Safe http://www.petsafe.net/doors

This Thursday Night on Halloween I hope to be discussing LIVE your thoughts on Pet Doors and what other additional services you can add to your local WCO Company.

I put one on my back door for our german shepherd. The idea is great but two issues I have that would discourage me from buying another is.
1. There are two swinging parts to the door so when the dog goes out or in, these to pieces clack together and it is really LOUD so depending on where your bedroom is and how often your dog goes in and out at night, it can be miserable.
2. The dog has to be square in front of the door and pause for it to get the signal from the collar. I had to stop using that part because my dog would try to go through and if it had not unlocked fast enough, he would just bark for someone to let him out if he really had to "go".

I must say in fairness that I got mine early last year and it is very possible that the design and technology could have improved so do not take my thoughts as a reason to not investigate the product but do some tests out of the box before you actually install. It was my first one so I never even thought about doing some testing before I cut the giant hole in my door. smile

P.S. Robb, thanks to you and all your gests on the price podcast. I have listened to all of your shows and many more than once but that pricing podcast is one I will listen to many many times. You personally gave information about armadillos from your experience and I am currently getting my butt kicked on a armadillo job because of my poor pricing decision.....but it will be the last time. (hopefully) smile

Sincerely

Richard Waite

Being in a colder climate, I'm guessing that pet doors are not as common. I personally love them. ( Not for me! For all the wild animals that use them and get us jobs! ) Pet doors were originally invented by raccoons.

I have considered installing the electronic pet doors. The pet stores sell them but don't install them. They refer the work out. As far as I know there is only one guy in the area doing it as a part time business. I'm sure there is a template but imagine a wrong measurement and cutting into a $500 door. However, there is probably more money to be made as a "POOP FAIRY". ;-) On a serious note though I have found "gate repair" to be very profitable and we've all run into crappy gates. Many times the gate is dragging because when it was new it only had to clear the new sod - not 5" of grass like now. I have had lot's of customers gripe about their gates so now I carry a few anti-sag kits, brackets and misc hardware including some all thread, lag screws/bolts and black spray paint. Most of the time the hardware can be painted to look like new and is dry by the time you need it. At times I only need to adjust the gate and other times I may need to trim the bottom. I average about $45-$60 + materials on most gates and I am usually done in an hour or less. I only do this for new and existing customers while I'm on site for other work. Sorry Robb if I strayed too far from your original question.

Actually you were right on topic. Stop by on the podcast and tell us all about the joys of being the Poop Fairy !!!

Lot of side work related to pets . Most families have at least one and things like pet doors and pet waste removal are two things some people would pay for. I knew a guy who made a living switching out pet waste pans in high rise condos on the beaches.

He made $35 a week for twice a week people and $55 a week for 3 times a week people. (2002-2004).

Man came dressed in white like a butler, used a hotel room service cart and just switched out pans up and down the elevators.

For this type of service its all about your location. I would starve trying up here in North Central Florida.

Yeah, there are a few in this area doing it full time. Pet waste management is that little niche business that no one really thinks about and some have capitalized on it. Pet waste receptacles with bags are becoming more common in the parks in our area as well. I know I appreciate them when I'm dodging dog turds while setting mole traps.

Plastic fence gates are a joke: no structural strength and they're heavy. Wouldn't have plastic fence on a bet.
We've had a combination of a rubber-flap dog door and a spring-loaded door into the interior for years. The dogs learn very quickly how to open the man-door.
Tonto is a year-and-a-half old Bluetick Coonhound, ~55 lbs. Was sold to us as a "Beagle mix." Definite hound-doggy characteristics as a pup, but he grew...and grew...and grew. Barely fits thru the dog door, has to crouch and squeeze thru.

Plastic fences, don't get me started Dave. Ugliest most useless crap ever put in a yard next to that useless winding curbing that does nothing. I got trapped in a vinyl fenced yard doing snakes, the temp dropped dramatically while I was in there and the gate seized when it contracted. That garbage isn't strong enough to climb so lucky for me they had a panel missing in a far back corner, I crawled through and had to walk all the way around the block to get back to my truck.
