I have a woman who has a major coon problem. I did work at her house and she had coons coming in over her garage door getting into her garage. Right now they are residing under her deck. She wants me to trap them out but she has about a dozen cats hanging around. I tried baiting a box trap with sweet flavored bait and for some reason the cats seem to be attracted to it for some reason. My next idea is duke dog proofs but I just wanted to get some input from others out there whether that would keep from catching cats. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank
Dave

I purchased a dog proof the other day and figured it would work but I ve had a few tell me they ll catch and hold cats. I was thinking of something sweet as chocolate syrup? I once trapped a barn that had cats in it and used cherries as bait and didn't have to worry about the cats. Didn't seem to mind it but for some reason these ones whether curious or just that hungry have been interested in them for some reason. I'm not and ADC trapper I'm just looking to do someone a favor and pick some of you guys brains that deal with scenarios like this often.

Dave,
When looking dog proofs to exclude cats, be sure you're looking for "Dukes". On the Duke, the animal must PULL on the trigger. This pretty much eliminates it from catching anything more than coon and possum. Those who have caught cats and dogs in dog proofs, I wonder if they are using the push pull trigger system.
I've caught coon amongst cats in cage traps with marshmallows and molasses. I hang two or three big ones in the back of the cage, dribble a line of molasses in and away from the trap and scatter some miniature marshmallows in a line out and across where I think the coon may be traveling. The miniatures get his attention and he'll follow that line of molasses back to the trap.
Set several cages for multiple catches and even if you do catch a cat or two you'll still have traps to get the coon.
