I have a woman who has a major coon problem. I did work at her house and she had coons coming in over her garage door getting into her garage. Right now they are residing under her deck. She wants me to trap them out but she has about a dozen cats hanging around. I tried baiting a box trap with sweet flavored bait and for some reason the cats seem to be attracted to it for some reason. My next idea is duke dog proofs but I just wanted to get some input from others out there whether that would keep from catching cats. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank

Dave

I have caught cats, possums, skunks as well as coons in dp's. Bait is the best way to sort out the cats. Although, I have one farm I trap every year. I use marshmellows for bait and always catch a few cats at the farm.

Sounds like her REAL problem is having a dozen cats hanging around to me.

I am gonna bet the coons moved in real close to some idiot feeding those cats to me.

Is it possible to positive set the ingress/egress points and not use bait?

I've yet to catch a cat using Blackies Fur King and had barn cats on those coon jobs.

I'd also tell her to stop feeding/attracting the coons with cat food.

See if they have FCAP there--Feral Cat Adoption Program---they fix and immunize feral cats for super low cost---then you could trap them AND the coon.

I have never caught a cat using our sweet baits in a DP or cage trap as of yet. Been a long time since I remember catching a domestic or feral cat. If an animal is hungry or very curious it can happen with certain trap placements in response to about any odor it seems at times.

Actually, there are probably a lot of us that faced nearly the same conditions. Rather than tell you what brand ( It was a purchased lure ) I'll be waiting for you to tell us what worked best for you.

I purchased a dog proof the other day and figured it would work but I ve had a few tell me they ll catch and hold cats. I was thinking of something sweet as chocolate syrup? I once trapped a barn that had cats in it and used cherries as bait and didn't have to worry about the cats. Didn't seem to mind it but for some reason these ones whether curious or just that hungry have been interested in them for some reason. I'm not and ADC trapper I'm just looking to do someone a favor and pick some of you guys brains that deal with scenarios like this often.

Dave,

When looking dog proofs to exclude cats, be sure you're looking for "Dukes". On the Duke, the animal must PULL on the trigger. This pretty much eliminates it from catching anything more than coon and possum. Those who have caught cats and dogs in dog proofs, I wonder if they are using the push pull trigger system.

I've caught coon amongst cats in cage traps with marshmallows and molasses. I hang two or three big ones in the back of the cage, dribble a line of molasses in and away from the trap and scatter some miniature marshmallows in a line out and across where I think the coon may be traveling. The miniatures get his attention and he'll follow that line of molasses back to the trap.

Set several cages for multiple catches and even if you do catch a cat or two you'll still have traps to get the coon.

I guess a lot of you guys probably take a barrelful of raccoons every day so this is in no way a criticism. We do less than 1500 raccoons a year and to be quite honest, I would never have had need to set a DP, had I owned one.

Even when fur trapping, I would have to admit to catching almost every breed of dog that you would find afield. These were all caught in fox sets, however.

I do recall catching one black Lab in a raccoon set under a building. He watched me set the trap and then decided to jump on it. I let him out immediately and although he fell in love with me, he stayed away from that building forever.

I guess that a DP would certainly be useful for fur trapping in areas that I would otherwise be afraid to set a trap but I just don't see how this applies to ADC work?

I'm with Paul. Maybe I haven't tried all the various dp traps on the market the ones I have tried leave me convinced nothing beats the standard cage trap in eighty percent of what we do and for the rest the 160 over the hole deals with it.

A cat is no problem in a dogproof.A notch in lip of a 5 gallon pail, put pail over cat, sit on pail and release dogproof.A good pair of channel locks makes it easier. In a live trap, a bath before release educates most cats. Some cats have a sweet tooth.Clints big box dogproof that uses leverage to hold is real easy on an animal.
