Hello,

I have a potential squirrel job. The squirrels are using the telephone wires to climb onto an apartment building and they have made an entrance hole into the building.
The hole is about 35 feet high. My ladders do not go up that high. Can I do an effective job not being able to reach the hole?

I don't know if I will be able to access the attic. The client says it is a crawl space and it sounds like I will have to enter the tenants living areas to enter the crawl space.

If I do the job when will I know that I have removed all the squirrels?

If I can't do the job properly, of course, I won't take the job.

No I am not going to purchase a longer ladder. I do not wish to work that high up.

Thanks

That hole is the known travel way of the offending squirrels. Say you set cages on the ground, you could be there weeks trapping every other squirrel around. You need to get to the hole,if not then you should pass. Its better to pass on a job than to do it badly and start out with a bad reputation.

You wont be doing the repair/exclusion but there's no sense in anyone else doing it until the squirrels are trapped. You're a trapper, not a carpenter. Do your job and let the carpenters do theirs.

If the apartment building has a maintenance man/crew, they might be doing the repair or a local carpenter/handiman might be hired to do it.

Offer to trap the squirrels and coordinate your activities with whoever is doing the repair. After a day or two of trapping, have them plug the hole with a wad of newspaper. If it gets removed, trap another day or two. If the newspaper is still there, the repair can happen.

Trapping on the ground, use plenty of traps. Chances are you'll have the offending animals the first day along with a few of their friends. There is absolutely nothing wrong with bringing down the local population a bit. The customer will thank you for it.

Coondog6 I hope you aspire to do more then just trap.
I agree with everyone but the above if your not gonna seal it up pass on it.

Don't let anyone think you have to trap the whole neighborhood just to get your target squirrel.
You can use any "trap on a stick " not just a Koro, but also snap traps even a squirrel cage.
You still need to be on a ladder to seal it up and I am not talking about using a can of stuffit !!

I turned down a squirrel job this week, because it was a third floor soffit. I just bought a brand new truck and my utility cap is being installed next week, so I had no way to get my big ladders to the house. So unfortunately I did lose a customer, but the way I see it, is that's better than doing the job incorrectly and getting bad word of mouth.
