It opens tomorrow morning so we'll be short 3 guys for the next nine days. Last year one of our guys got a doe. ( His wife shot a buck and a doe ) Everybody travels through some of the best deer country in the state to get up north where the wolves have eaten them all. Go figure.

Paul, looking at the same scenario on a smaller scale: Our locals hike back into 300 acres of brush, briars, and thickets because they "think" that's where the deer will be "hiding". Meanwhile, there will be groups of does and typically a huge buck laying under a single little willow tree in a drainage canal about 100 yards from where all the "expert" hunters park their camo trucks.

I have watched this behavior (both deer and hunters) for 20 years or more. Having relayed this info to my neighbor many years ago, he "gets it". He goes out first day each year, wearing tennis shoes, NO scent-free clothing, sits on a stump, and bags a monster deer by 10 AM. People give the deer way too much credit for being "smart". They need to quit reading all the BS in the hunting mags and go in the woods once in a while and get a sample of reality.

I always get a kick out of some of these professional hunters who are going to tell me how to do it.

They'll tell you that you MUST have the right cover scent before going into the woods. One of the eight points I've got on my wall, I had to lay my cigarette down to take the shot.

They talk about their custom rifle and the 1500 dollar Super Duper Excalibur scope. I've watched scores of deer die through my little El-Cheapo Tasco.

They tell you that you have to travel to the remote wilds of some far away land where the deer live. I had two bucks locked up and fighting in my back yard last week. For that matter, we had a 9 point buck running around INSIDE of Wal-Mart a couple weeks ago.

Then they'll promote the camouflage. You must blend in and cover your face with shoe polish. I've killed deer wearing jeans and my dirty work shirt. The color blind critters don't seem to care that my jacket is red and black plaid.

They promote the best deer calls and tell you how using them is an art form. I've stopped deer dead in their tracks by yelling, "Hey! Where you going?!".

They use climbing stands, blinds and camo screening and sit in silence. We've attracted deer to the field while running the combine. I've seen curious deer come to the edge of the cut down and stare at us while we were logging those woods.

"Only the proper rifle or bow with the proper bullet or arrow point will take a deer.". Heck, my wife took one with a Toyota Tercel!

But... Anyway... Let them believe what they want to believe. After all, somebody has to buy all the latest gimmicks.

Killed quite a few with my bow in Wisconsin. Several over 20"

It sure is cold from the end of October till spring.

Some of the dumbest deer on earth, during the rut.

I'm afraid I am going to have to agree with Muddawg. I don,t watch the deer shows like I used to.

Bow hunting is my favorite kind of deer hunting. Weather is still warm, trees are still green, and the woods are alive with activity.

I absolutely hate gun deer season.

Today I was sitting in the middle of a x where the pine had a clearing north, south, east, and west. Sitting there about an hour and all of a sudden two people are standing on the trail about 200 yards away facing me. I raise my arms so they see me and the one guy waves. Everything is thick timber except the path of cut timber that I am sitting in and he is facing me from the trail.

After about 15 minutes I get up and walk down to where he is and asked him if he really planned to shoot directly at me if a deer happened to jump out of the timber. He responded "NO".

I decided to leave and try my luck somewhere else. I make it a point to give the Mrs. my GPS coordinates just incase. I do not trust any of these guys with guns.

For many years I traveled Wisconsin getting cattle for farmers throughout the U.S. Quite a few years I invited friends up to hunt. We had written permission to hunt as well as copies of the property boundry lines as shown on the deeds. On at least 6 occasions the DNR was called saying we were on another's land. At least 20 times hunters without permission tried to hunt next to us or in our stands. Several times a guy rode his 4 wheeler on my friends property to scare the deer away while we were hunting.

The CO's were awful, disrespectful, and threatening. We were always within the law.

I have been to see my friends, but I am too old to fight the dimwits anymore.

hah- we call it the great north migration. 99 percent of the hunters migrate north to hunt deer here- we just shake our heads and snicker cause we know they are just running away from home. why it's a north thing- God only knows. lol

Nate, I'm not a deer hunter but I spend a lot of time in the woods during deer season. Over the years I've had several hunter tell me that minutes after I passed by, so did the deer they shot.

I'm always happy to do my part. smile

I'm sure a lot of those super animals that you see on TV are scouted by locals who get paid big bucks if the animals is shot on camera. I hope not, but that's the way it worked in Alaska. Spot a record polar bear, call your best client, and he's flying up from California or Texas or wherever the next day.

There is a BIG difference between shooting one with a bow at 20 yards vs a gun hunter at 200 yards. I prefer bow and late muzzy season as its just me and the deer they act like a deer should using their nose and eyes instead of running crazy the tough part of gun hunting is making the shot not having the getting the critter close enough or an open window to make one. I think turkeys are pretty dumb too until I have a turkey tag in my pocket LOL

BTW I think a Toyota Tercel is a bigger projectile than any broadhead or bullet any hunter throws at a deer no wonder she took it down WOW LOL
