With heavy rains and warm temps, it seems the 'coon are moving well. I often catch a good many 'coon in abandoned buildings and old barns. One should never overlook these as coon will often 'den up' in numbers in them.

Just finished reading all of this. Lots of awesome info. Hopefully I get a couple coons this year being my first. Got a cpl 160's for bucket sets and some 1.75's that I plan on using to triple as coon/fox/yote traps most likely in dirt hole and pocket sets. The illustrations are from our Hunting and Trapping regulations magazine here in NY. Here is a better description and more pics. These are what we have to use in NY. The bottom right picture depicts the setup that I have been using perfectly. I have been inserting a metal screen at the top end of the box which helps me save on bait. I normally use cookies and Marshmellows and they work great. I have used other purchased lures and baits with good success also. In my experience I have never had a problem with dogs in this set up. Could it catch cats, yes it could but dogs I would think would be near impossible. When I cut my notches in the side pieces I make them tight enough to keep my trap in place. great illustrations by the way. Thanks CLT I am no expert and nowhere near a huge numbers guy but my reputation counts in the area that I trap in and I don't need any incidentals. Small community and word of mouth travels quickly. HEY LT you guessed poke berries or maybe sumac for the number one food for coon in my area well the answer is hack berries, little red berrie that grows on trees ,they stay on the trees darn near all wintersome years. They taste like sweet tea to me. Hunted my walker female some last winter 32 of the first 36 trees that she treed on were hack berry trees, that was hunting around corn fields the majority of the time. Ill have to admit my dog has taught me as much about coon trapping and coon habits as l ever learned on my own, she showed me alot of out of hidden coon denning areas to. Heard red ohearn say he was in mississippi trapping one time he said the coon wouldnt take his bait because they were in the hacks. Poke berries, Hacks? Anybody have a Picture of these trees/bushes???Many times regional names are completely different than the tree's real name...

Oh, I Googled it LT, its just there seem to be many "varieties" online which People call Hackberry ... I just thought out of all of them shown, there was a particular One. *** Remember when you were here and I called the "tree" Popple... it was a regional name

LOL@ Biggs. Two dug up traps huh LOL? Sounds like he knows more about steel traps than a trapper. Now Drifter would tell you to glue a piece of 80 grit sandpaper to the trap pan and make him use a bit too much pressure, but I had one so bad I glued #12 fish hooks to the trap pan. Turned out to be a fox, not a coon. Try the Drifter sandpaper method. It takes 9 out of 10 diggers. Now the Drifter had many experiences. He and two hound dogs were twisting out a gound hog one time. Unfortunately that ground hog turned out to be a Badger LMAO! I understand that Badger had a little something to say to him and both dogs
