Is 1/8 7x19 galvanized cable overkill for making your own disposable stakes?

No, it'll be fine.
I've used 1/8"---7x7 and 1x19.
Never heard of 7x19, but I'm not a cable-meister like some.

Yeah that may be over kill. But if you got it use it. On trapping yotes tho make sure that stake goes way under ground. If the coyote pumps it out a bit that stiff cable will be hard to bed a trap over on a remake.

I've had good luck with 1/8" 7×19 cable myself . In fact it's my go to cable for everything I anchor with the exception of my predator traps which are all set up with 18" #2 HD chain stake rigs with Iowa earth anchors. But all my cable extensions drowning rigs and earth anchors I make from that vary cable you mention. Reason I prefer it over others is that 7×19 is more flexible than 7×7 or 1×19 due to having 133 smaller strands which makes it very kink and fray resistant where 7×7 has 49 heavier strands and 1×19 having 19 heavy thick strands . It gives ya a nice strong long lasting anchor that last several years with great flexibility and plenty of strength for any job at hand . I've been very pleased with its results over the years .
