Wink, we have the flir T300. If we didn't use it for some bat research projects I would be looking at a very expensive paper weight.
I know we've all hit the topics before as to where this "might" be useful including but not limited to...
1) locating animal behind a wall
2) locating animal above ceiling (or litter or raccoons, etc..)
Ultimately, the factors that will confound many are the need for ambient temps to be different enough from the FLIR, reflective materials like fiberglass insulation backing and a variety of others.
We bought ours strictly thinking of the #1 and #2 uses and in the end we have used it more for thermal studies than anything else. Now, the phone app style, I could get behind as it is the cheapest way folks could get some thermal action without losing their precious cash.
I will say that I have clients who have enjoyed watching bat emergence through the FLIR when we have an opportunity to do so (not often) and you can run ours into your laptop (the new ones you can connect wirelessly to your laptop, phone, ipad), so that you can record in other software. We use a mac program called el gato that is a video capture software that fits the ports on our FLIR.

If you buy one, just know that there will be times it will shine, and times you will think you need to change careers to an energy audit inspector to make any money with the thing.
We love ours now, but only due to our niche use of it for thermal studies.
Very cool that a phone app is going to be available!
