Hello All,

I have a beaver job when the ice melts. I am trapping what they call a kettle pond. It was made by glaciers and is about an acre. The pond is 15 feet deep from edge to edge. You take one step into the pond and you are in 15 feet of water.

Since the job is in Mass. I will have to trap with live traps.

The only sits I can think of are channel sets, and making a floating cage trap set that they can swim into.

Suggestions?

Caster mound set with a large cage trap. Front of the trap right at the edge of the water. Make sure the trap is solid.

Hancock or bailey traps braced and placed along the bank edges or a comstock or two should work.

Give Dave Wallace a call. He uses floats quite a bit.

Just because something is legal doesn't make it smart.

Comstocks in the channels and/or the Comstock cage, set on sticks, just under the surface at the take outs.

The Advanced two part beaver cage at any take out slide or at a dam crossover. Use a little castor or food lure in the back of the cage.

Have the owner put out a couple of sliced carrots on the edge. Maybe try sweet potato. Not much. Maybe by the time you come they will start eating. Need 3 weeks or more.

If you wait you might want to try poplar or a food lure for bait first, if the carrots and potato are not being noticed. You set traps floating or on land you may catch 2 or 3 but scare the rest at the beginning limiting you success with a castor lure.

Koro or hancock would be very good. If it is a cage on a baited set, the bigger, wider, and taller the better whether floated or not.

Set cages close at the beginning. You catch one, another will come to it.

You may want to place debris on cage to make it appear like a beaver did it. Seems to make a lot better eye appeal for me.

Block off cage in such a way it is easier for the beaver to enter cage to investigate lure or bait than to come from the outside. That is why a taller, wider cage is best. Most of the time on a baited set.
