Any suggestions on preventing fox sets from freezing, without use of waxed dirt? Will crumpled up wax paper work under the trap?

I have for yrs. used waxed paper crumpled up and placed under trap as well as a piece over the trap pan, then lightly covered with dirt 1/8" to 1 /4".
You can also use regular table salt mixed in with dry dirt to help keep the set functioning. If doing so, make sure you put some sort of barrier UNDER the trap to keep the frost from comming up.
Can also use dried pine needles, leaves, or grass.

Whats up? I am going to try peat moss but not salt ,it makes the trap rust too bad. The idea about the paper is stop moisture from wicking up from the soil to the trap and covering. Just heard about it, not tried it. It forms a barrier. But it adds a scent and possibly noise.

puttin peat moss under the trap will also make a barrier from frost underneath the trap. I used it last season with real good results.

calcium chloride and dry dirt. Careful to cover this stuff though. I have caught crows by their heads when they started pecking at the white color they saw. Stupid bridger are too fast, I should probably switch to something else.

A bobcat in your trap at 5:00am is better than a stout cup of coffee anyday.

waxed paper gives no scent and if crumpled, does not make noise.

Barry just make sure your peat is dry, if not it will still frost up on the jaws. Might not freeze up might frost up an make it fire slower.
