This customer had squirrels in his attic and I took care of them last week.Everything was quiet for four days and then last night he heard a racket. I get out there this morning and find a hole in the roof a raccoon would be proud of.

I tell customer that a raccoon broke into his attic but when I get up there all I find is a gray squirrel.

Could a raccoon have made a hole and then left within 12 hours? Or did an angry squirrel make the hole?

Just in case picture didn't attach because I am having trouble: the hole is through the shingles at the gutter line close to two foot long and around 6 inches wide

I'm going with the theory that the raccoon made the hole and the squirrel took advantage. Some raccoons break into buildings just for the fun of it and let in all sorts a rodents and insects. But, I have taken both raccoon and squirrels out of the same attic on several occasions.

Look at the hole and see if you have chew marks, bite marks, or both. I agree with Paul that it is most likely a raccoon that made the opening that large but I've also seen some holes made by squirrels that coon would of been proud of.

If the damage is mainly ripped wood with bite marks made by canines, raccoon would be the culprit. But if you don't see anything but a nicely trimmed opening then I'd go with squirrels or some other type of rodent.

We did one last week. Hole at the gutter line 6 in wide and 2 ft. long. Coon tracks all over thwe gutter and down spout. Ended up with 3 squirrels and no coons. Snow on the roof and only squirrel tracks. Put tape over the hole for a week. Nothing more going in or out, sealed up the hole. No more problems, so far.

When you did the original job. Was there any point of entry big enough for a raccoon to use?

Just because something is legal doesn't make it smart.

Originally, one baseball sized hole in the front of the home, positive set, one squirrel and sealed it up. Quiet for 4 days before last night. This new hole is on the other side of the house.

I knew it was a raccoon and told the customer so but when I went in the attic and only found a squirrel I know what he was thinking.(that I was just making up a raccoon to cover for missing something last week). Thanks Paul, Eric, and Jim for verifying I'm not crazy.

question for ya, did you check that side of the house anymore after you started the job? is it possible that the coon ripped the hole while you was doing the job. also is it possible that the coon opened the hole but never went in? the reason I ask is in my area, when coon rips into a home, most of the time the squirrels will not go in there for 3 to 6 days, unless the coon never entered the attic. I can't see a pic so just assuming

It is possible that a raccoon made the hole before I completed the job because I only got on the roof the first day. It is also possible the coon didn't enter the attic. There was blown in insulation in the attic that the squirrels had been in for a month before I was called. I didn't see evidence of a raccoon trail or feces though.

On a side note, I have fooled with trying to attach a picture from the gallery on my smartphone and am having no luck. What's the trick?
