Looking to buy a couple cages for trapping nuisance skunks and coon. I was wondering what your guys and or gals opinions are on brand and models?
Also, is there really a need to use cages on beaver in some your opinions?

Starvalleytrappe, for spring door, pan fired traps I use Safeguard and Tomahawk. For wire trigger traps I use Comstock and Advanced. For drop door, ring lock traps I use Freedom Brand.

They all work fine and have their place.

Starvalley, since I've never used a cage for beaver in Wisconsin, I'm not sure why you would use one in Wyoming. You probably need to tell us more.

I don't think that I would need a cage to trap beaver but wondering if some of ya have had to use them on some jobs (such as golf course with residence or something of that nature). I plan on doing some nuisance work part time this summer. I have most traps I need except the cages. I feel in areas around houses that want skunks and coons removed that a cage will likely be the best for the situation. So my real question would be if I'm only gonna get a couple what would the best choice be? I've used cages minimum amounts. I really don't know a lot about them.

When trapping beaver in residential areas, I find I sleep a lot better using cages. I've also trapped beaver in areas where people walk their dogs and let them run loose.

The Comstock beaver trap and the Advanced two piece beaver trap are my go to cages for beaver.

My advanced trap beaver cages do double duty. I've caught cats, dillers, raccoons, possums and turtles in them so I ain't out money on single duty cages and the flip side is that I've caught beaver in my universal advanced double door cages.
I've found the large beaver trap with it's large opening so well accepted by beaver that I actually prefer it as first option over all others. I have absolute confidence that I can set a job up with cages, conis, footholds and snares and put money on finding the beaver in the cage first.

For cage traps I am running only Comstocks and Williams brands. I've tried a lot of others over the years and sold them all after finding the Comstocks and Williams brands.

I've got Havaharts (didn't know any better) and they do work in a pinch BUT recently got a flush mount Tomahawk and shortly after got a Comstock 5X5 w/cone for squirrel and a 2 door Comstock w/cone 9X11 (THANK YOU JIM & JUDY). WOW what a difference! User friendly, heavy duty, less mess (coon can't pull everything in), versatile and door(s) stay shut! PLUS EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!

So, for what it's worth coming from a newbie ADC professional also, don't waste your hard earned money on lesser cages!

Like carlswildlife, I am going to sell some older cages at our annual neighborhood garage sale and buy some more Comstocks!

I run Tomahawk Pro's and have ZERO complaints.

When it comes to Safeguard and Tomahawk remember that the professional line is definitely a step above the regular traps.

I envy you guys that have whimpy raccoons. The only cage that doesn't get lacerated ( outside of the Wickenkamp ) is the Tomahawk with the pan protector.

I know most of you guys might laugh, but our raccoons can pull the pan right through the Safeguard protectors. ( I'm sure right now, there are a bunch of raccoon having a seminar on how to screw up Tomahawks )

P.S. The absolute best cage for muscle-bound raccoons that we have found ( besides the Wickenkamp ) is the Professional Tomahawk in the 9x9x26 configuration. It has been my experience that you can catch just as many ( maybe more ) raccoons in a 9x9x26 than you can in a 10x12x32.

I run all types of traps but know typically you get what you pay for. Buy the best you can afford.
Make sure you write in your agreement with the customer that they pay for stolen traps. Nothing makes you go into the red faster than a $60 cage trap that is stolen.

Don't know how much of a problem theft is for others. Usually I don't have much of an issue, but if you did I guess it would be a good thing to add to a contract. Lost one CDR drowning set up last year on the road, not at a private home. Had seen an old pick up go by several times, so it wasn't a surprise when the trap came up missing, but at least he left the t-bars, LOL. A snare went in next. I like to set late in the day when possible, try to get in and out in a night or two.

Not so much theft here as damage. Damage can range from some soft headed idiot releasing a catch by brute forcing the doors to drop damage from height to getting run over by equipment or dumpsters dropped on them.

Strong frames and springs as found in the advanced traps and others alleviate alot of this damage.

I hope that I won't be worrying about theft. I havnt lost a trap yet to a theif. Did lose a marten to what I believe to be a thief though.
