Anyone ever come across plans for making your own snake tongs? I think I could make a decent pair after a lot of trial and error, but would like to shorten the learning curve a little.

There ain't a snake in my area I can't hook and grab by hand. Tongs are snake crushers and a crushed snake is a (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) off snake at best or a dead snake at worst.
Tongs also give a false sense of security. The first and only timber I ever tonged slipped to far forward giving me a mid body grab. Unfortunately the tongs locked up closed and when the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) off timber came back up the tongs at me he got a free set of tongs as I barely got clear of the sharp end of the snake.
Never ever again for me.

JMO if you can't get comfortable hooking hots then you need to leave them alone.

Agree with David, we started with gentle giant tongs when we started our company a few years back, I still ended up using them more like a hook anyway
but if you were using the mouth as it was designed it spreads the pressure and has a rubberized platform as well.

However every forum or article I've seen where folks are using tongs they look like they've already bisected the snakes body with force completely unnecessary for our native snakes.

The hook is ultimately the tool of professionals and to the snake it is more natural like crawling over a stick or something in the environment than being "mashed" between two surfaces which can cause the fight or flight to increase let alone injury to the snake.

I don't have anywhere near the amount of calls for snakes or experience that he has but I'd agree wholeheartedly, go for the hook and learn to use that rather than the tongs.

(I will say though the tongs are useful for lots of other needs we have and odd jobs. Reaching an out of the way pigeon nest or dead animal/bird the reach I get from my old gentle giant tongs is nearly indispensable.

Luckily for wormbobskey, we have few poisonous snakes here, a few copperhead and timber rattlers, I've only seen one of the later around here. You could probably do about as good of a job if you want a grabber with a good pair of trash/pick-up grabbers. Though for those, snake in the house calls a long and short hook would probably be more useful when they get behind stuff that you can't move easily.

Currently all I use is a hook and have good success with it, just wanted to have an extra tool to make the occasional snake jobs I do get easier. Your right Snipper, have only had a couple copperhead jobs and luckily no rattlers yet. And FYI, I turn loose all the snakes I catch. I have never had to kill a snake to catch it.

I don't kill snakes either but I do use hooks and tomahawk tongs. I'm going to disagree with the majority here because one thing worse than an injured snake is a bitten human. I think you can over squeeze the snake but that is better than letting someone take a rock or a hoe to it which may be your customers only alternative if you choose to turn down snake calls. They are also good for picking up baby mammals in hard to reach places, placing traps in hard to reach places and retrieving things from the front of your truck bed.
Warrior you need to contact Eric and put on a snake handling seminar or better yet make a DVD contact Alan Huot and get him to sell it for you. I'm not busting your kahounas I'm serious it is a needed educational tool.

I have used snake tongs for grabbing small raccoons when my arms are not long enough to reach them. Maybe they are better put to use for raccoons.
You can grab a baby raccoon by the tail also and it works well.

I use tongs and a hook, I deal with a lot of rattlers and wouldn't have it any other day.

There are situations that a set of tongs would be better than a hook, and vice-versa.

That's what I was thinking Chick. Has anyone ever seem plans on how they are made? I make a lot of my equipment and would like to try and make a pair of tongs. Unless someone has a pair they want to part with for cheap.

Well I made me a set of tongs and don't understand what all the grief was about. Tested them on a 2' long northern water snake and although he was extremely irritated with me the tongs didn't so much as scratch his hide. He is now happily relocated to a nice swampy area where he can live to old age. They were a lot simpler to make than I thought.

Aluminum tube body 3' long and pistol grip (1/4-20 all thread and nuts to attach grip to body), external steel tube push rod to actuate aluminum jaw, 6-32 nut and bolts. Wrapped top and bottom of jaws in electrical tape to cushion the jaws. Jaws will open to about 2 1/2 inches and close down to 1/2 an inch. Not much good on small snakes but should work great on some of our bigger black snakes.
