Do you charge differently when you have to respond in the middle of the night?

Of course and I tell them so. If you want me now it's this price if you want to schedule during business hours it's this price. Of course this is determined only after I have determined whether it truly is a legitimate emergency. If it is a must roll now call they just get the first price.

Automatic c-note added to my normal rates unless I detect something I really don't want to deal with, usually human, then it's Katy bar the door on pricing.

It depends on how much I really want the job. My phone says the office is open from 9am - 4pm Monday - Friday. If an emergency message is left (aside from injured rabbit, bird, etc.) they get a phone call.

I learned a lesson from my last boss and apply it frequently. "You can always discount off the price, but its hard to add to it". So my emergency rate is very high ($379 service call) and my "weekend" rate ($249 service call) is higher than the normal service call ($169) as well.

What this allows me to do is qualify how important everything is to the prospect. When I do the job, if I feel it deserves the basic pricing, then that's what they get. However, if they are a PIA or the job is much more difficult than expected, I keep the rates I quoted. I'll also say that if I know I've got to run traps in an area and the prospect is in the general vicinity, I quote my regular rates regardless during the weekend as I have already scheduled time for that area. But I do make sure they know they are getting the regular rate and why. This bit of marketing has gotten me not only jobs but referrals as well.

I don't have after hours rates. If I got a lot of after hours calls I probably would but I am in the process of trying to build a business and feel that the customer's good will is more important than money in my present situation.

My service agreement states that unscheduled requests made after hours, Sundays or holidays are subject to an additional $75 fee. This fee was initiated because of the late night calls of "I can't sleep so come pick up the armadillo that's banging around in the trap", or "you need to come out as the dogs keep barking at something in the trap", etc.,.

Good structure WCT, thanks for sharing.

I can't answer for Mike, but I can answer for our company. You have one of these two answers and we charge a lot more than Mike:

Answer one: "I don't care how much it costs; come out and get my bat, raccoon, opossum, skunk, flying squirrel, etc.

Answer two: "That's a lot of money. I think we wait until morning." THAT'S OUR FAVORITE CHOICE

P.S. There is a third answer, but we've not heard it so far: "Come out right away at no extra cost, or we will never use you again!"

It is important that you understand the mentality of your customers. No one with an ounce of brains expects to call you in the middle of the night and not pay extra for your services. We have had such calls in the middle of the night and needless to say, these people have probably never paid for single thing in their entire lives! They are never customers and as a matter of fact, they are what you and your paying customers see when you cash your payroll check. ( That would be state and federal taxes )

"how do customers feel about the extra fee?"

They have always waited until morning when I reminded them of the fee. One even claimed I woke him up, at 7 am, after calling me at 10 pm the night before. Keep in mind that the fee wasn't created to generate additional income but to curb after hours calls. After reading Pauls post perhaps I should charge more.

I agree, but if a customer awakes to something that made its way IN the house (coons, bat, snake). They aren't going to wait. Or do you make them?

I too add a C note to the daily charge. Throw back, I also tell them if I get there and I can't find it, you will pay me. If they lost sight of the bat, snake etc.. they always wait till the morning. And as Paul said, I do get waken up in the night for a freebee because the police told them to call. All inner city calls. Call a plumber in at 2am and see what they get. Who ever went back to work without getting over time? Same principal here.

For those that accept late night calls I would define that as an "emergency call" which should be more than an unscheduled after hours fee.

It's a communication issue...not an emergency.

While most of these calls are perceived emergencies by the customer ( Last night P.J. had to get a squirrel out of a furnace ) there is one emergency that I treat as such.

That would be the raccoon that falls into a home and can't get back out. We have at least one of these every year and a raccoon in your house can do more dollars worth of damage than an expensive service call.

I'm the guy who normally does these and one year we had three of them in the same subdivision right across the street. I guess working 2nd shift at the factory all those years makes me the likely technician.

I have had two weekend calls. The clients were so grateful to get a hold of a real person that they were willing to pay anything. One was a bat in the house and the other a squirrel in a home. They were quick and easy calls. I did charge a premium but, then felt guilty doing so.

I've only had two "emergency" calls.

One was a call, just at sunset, about a skunk grubbing on this guys lawn and he wanted me there "NOW!". I declined.

The other was at about the same time of day concerning two raccoons tearing up a lady's kitchen. I took the job and would have been happy to just do it for a normal hourly fee but I had already dealt with this lady and recommended that she lock the cat door which had become the point of entry. That job I charged double.

I have to agree with Paul. I was amazed at the damage.

Just answering the phone will net you an extra c-note most of the time.
I can't recall the number of times I got the second call from the one who balked at my fee telling me to come on.
