I bought a big tote of traps this last summer and mixed in the pot was a #4 Sargent, on average I paid $4.16 per trap the guy didn't have a clue what he had I guess. I was pleased.

Nice find. A picture would be nice, as there are several different pan types on the larger Sargent traps.

I am headed out to the shop now I'll try to get one of it. The chain is not original and one of the springs looks like a reg victor spring but other than that its in really good shape . The pan is raised letters if that tells you anything. Don't know a whole lot about it really, but its my fav oldy I have which isn't saying alot though.

I think the raised letter pans date the trap to the late 1800s, maybe 1890 or there abouts.

I would say the chain isn't original and maybe one spring but still a very collectable SARGENT. Great deal for $4.16.

Not sure what it would be worth, don't matter cause I think it's cool. Still for what I got in it it's pretty cool. Thought about maybe putting the right parts on it but probly not more than likely I'll just hang it up with some others. I've also got an old #3 with cast jaws square rivet frame with a victor pan but the pan is riveted on the post it's not a hump like all the other vice I have, kinda struck me as odd.

Can you give me a quick history on the Sargent co...the traps resemble the Newhouse models?

Best I can tell, prior to 1884 Sargent&Co. sold Newhouse and other trap brands along
with other products. The Sargent patent was slightly different than the NH and named
"Oneida Pattern". The 20s series (23-24 etc.) are square jawed. Some of the smaller
sq. jaws were marked "Crescent". They stopped making traps about 1915. This is the way I
read it in the Gerstell book.
