Hand forged for sure. I think if you were lucky someone might recognize it as to the maker and give you a good offer. I like that single jaw pin design.

The "locking rings" do nothing if an animals foot where actually in it.
It would not surprise me a bit that when your trap was first made it never had those on it.

What makes you think they were not put on there when it was built. Bc i disagree. Don't what makes you think that?. They look the same age as trap and they are forged.

I see no purpose for them. Your trap looks to be beaver size, if a beavers foot is in those jaws theres no way what you are calling locking rings are going set in the locked position. With the jaws open an inch your floating rings are going to still be sitting on top of the spring eyes getting driven upward.

Are the springs weak on the trap?

If they are, I would guess that those rings where fit in there to try to add some more meat between the jaws and the spring to force the jaws up better.

No the springs are very strong.
