We are looking at trail cams, wanting to set up just a couple - but the variety out there appears nearly endless, and is a bit confusing. Is there a wide swing in picture quality between manufacturers? Which combines high quality resolution with fair ease of use, reliability and durability? ie - what is the best buy for trail cams?

Blondie,
There are some great review sites but just a quick note.
Depends on the quality of pics or video you want or need, the Distance you want to capture from, and a ton of other little factors. Fairly close - 20 yards or less
I've used the dlc 550 coverts for years and have found few that beat Them for the money, would I like some of the expensive cams? Sure, but cost doesn't outweigh the added benefit for me. And there you have it. [color:#CC0000]We can't afford the real expensive cams, so best benefit for the buck is what I am looking for.
[/color]WCT magazine just did a review....
The best cams can produce crap shots of not setup right too... Too true Bill, I will check out the mp6 blks, thank you!

Before getting a cellular camera, make sure you have cellular coverage. HCO just released a GoCam for the Verizon network that will work off a Verizon data plan. They also have an AT&T version of that model as well. In regard to the Covert Code Black, it only works with the AT&T network. Also, anyone that has this model and it isn't the 2014 version should consider upgrading to the 2014 version. Covert is currently offering upgrade specials. The pricing I was given is $50 for the 2013 model and $100 for early models. The reason to upgrade is that AT&T is upgrading their cellular network and the versions before 2014 will not work once the upgrade is completed. For some, that is now while for others it may be some time next year. If you're just looking for a trail camera, I just did a post last week with some information regarding how to choose a model here http://www.trapperman.com/forum/ubbthrea...r_#Post4761122.

I have a stealth cam and have no complaints about it! its easy to program, easy to set, and take really good nighttime and day time videos and photos!!
All life demands a struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values of life.

Blondie,
I don't have any current shots handy, when I used them most was for feral hog trapping programs in my former employment. I bought all of mine through macks prairie wings they had the best price if you were buying a number of them. At the time this was 5 years ago now, they were running me $140 I believe and they were the smallest and best camera at the time.
No cellular ability so if you wanted something that is going to send you pics like Eric eluded to, that is a horse of another color.
For me the main pic quality I was looking for was to identify pigs based on their color patterns so I didn't need something to sell to national geographic, but I still wanted good photos for presentations and such.
I suppose for me the bottom line is always what I'm trying to get and what I truly need from the camera.
We are currently buying a gopro for some specialized survey work and we scrutinized which model based on what we truly need. Do we need 5mp, 10, 12, etc...? Do we need the extra couple of features that are at the top model level for $499 or can we use the one for $250.00 and get what we need?
I love great electronics and gadgets, but back in my trail cam days I was able to try them all (cuddeback, reconyx, etc...) on various field research projects and had colleagues using other models to compare to, in the end I was happier spending less and getting what I needed instead of that small series of killer color photos some of them got.
No matter which one you pick, one little issue I've personally found with many of the new ones in the lower price range and even some of the more expensive models is the batteries can be loose and it doesn't cause an issue till after you walk away thinking you are set.
Never thought about this when buying originally but it became an issue on quite a few since then....
Load of fun and very versatile of course, makes some of the work more interesting or helps in ability to share with other folks.
Good luck either way!
Justin

Wink, basically no sales or very limited I've hunted the last week. The silver 3+ edition has been $50.00 off. Best deal in terms of sale I've found thus far. Either the 3 or 4 are where most want to be for clarity and quality. There are some great ways to use this for fun of course but for inspections seeing behind or over objects really limitless. They are not great in low light despite saying they are, we've trailed the 4 on a whim once last year and didn't like the low light quality. That said we are marrying it to some led lights for some work we are doing. Possibilities are endless in case PJ hasn't convinced you yet... Neat world the guy opened up, though of course lots of folks entering this realm to knock his idea off...

Paul, Here is a link comparing the GoPro models http://shop.gopro.com/compare?category=cameras. They also have a lot of accessories including LED lights so you can customize it how you want. Keep in mind that they have a lot of submodels with black, silver, regular and then music or surf which can be a little confusing. I'd recommend using the Shop by Activity option on the GoPro website so you can see what accessories are more likely to be needed/wanted along with the cost of them.
