I went with compact florescent that are full spectrum,,,, They give the same vitamin d source as the sun and can help with depression in "wives",,,,,,,, cheaper and about the same energy savings a LED
They have new models that are "fast" start.........
I do have some LEDs as I am starting to instal solar on the Arizona and CA houses,,,,I am using them because my panels are all off grid 12 volt, not 110........
In the two years I have used them in arizona I have seen a reduction in energy bills....
I am also using a "smart" water heater,,,,,,(The hybrid/heat pump will not pay for it self) the unit learns when you use water and save about 200-250 per year,,,,this will pay for itself in 3 years and I bought the extended warranty from lows making it a 15 year unit

I absolutely love our new LED bulbs in the poultry house. We have tried the GE florescent twisties -last about 3-8 months sometimes a little longer. Florescent bulbs contain mercury- they aren't on the same planet as LED. Paul -you have my sympathy about the longevity thing- I too have to wonder if some of those LED bulbs will outlast me. Costco has LEDs for a reasonable price. We use a tankless water heater in the poultry house. The reason I know the florescent twisty bulbs don't last is because I write the date on them. X2 tried them in poultry houses, I am not a twisty fan. I may try some LED's though. The florescents just didn't last.

LOL
I've had all CFL's in my house for some yrs now, and have only had one go out. In the bathroom, over the tub, inside a closed, flush ceiling fixture, which the early ones say not to do. Too many spares that will likely outlast me, to go for the LED's. They do take forever to warm up outside, especially in the cold.
