Not sure what trap this chain is for. Looks like it would fit a #1 or maybe a #2 size. Is the first link at the swivel correct?

Hi Dale, Several companies used that chain. My first guess is that it is Oneida Community, off of a Newhouse or Hawley & Norton. Sargent and P.S.& W. also used this chain. I would say that it is correct. However, that first link is hand forged and was used to attach the chain to the swivel because the early swivels had a solid eye. This swivel is right for the chain but the hand forged link was not necessary because of the cold shut in the new style of swivel. Nice chain.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly... But I was leaning towards a Sargent swivel. I still wonder why the long link hook-up.
Thought about cutting that long link out and hooking the cast straight to the swivel. But about the time I do that I'll find out it is a special chain set up for some really rare trap.

NO Rob, It wasn't from your garage. I do have to say that your invite to look around in that garage was MUCH appreciated. Awesome collection and even some semblance of order.

Does that mean you might have a similar chain with that link to the swivel?

Union Hardware had a set up like that, but the swivel link was a little different, but the chain was just like the one you have pictured.

Dale, I would not change it. Also, those cold shut swivels are almost impossible to open and reclose without breaking them, even with heat. It can be done but it is a BIG risk.

Back in the parts box it goes, again!..... I'll add a chainless Union Hardware trap to the bucket list.

I dug out a Sargent trap with a similar chain. Looks like the same swivel but a little different chain.

Dale, that is a Sargent cast eight chain on your #1 Sargent so it is right. The Sargent cast eight is different in that on the loop of the eight there is one longer and one shorter loop. Some refer to it as the Narrow Cast eight.
Also that other chain you posted is Union Hardware style.

I've been going through some of my stuff and thinking I am more of a trap Parts Accumulator than a trap Collector....

The Sargent swivels are also longer than most of the other trap companies swivels.

Thanks for the info Kevin. Now if I start losing sleep looking for a "chainless" Union Hardware trap I have somebody to blame.

While we are on the odd chain subject. Here's a couple more that I'm a little fuzzy on. The one with the large cast ring connector is on a 1 1/2 PSW. The other two traps have no pans.

All three look like P.S.& W chains, the top one with the split ring with the rivet in it is correct, P.S.& W used that style of chain on their jump traps and some long springs also, one of which was the Good Lucks, the Good Lucks had a one piece pan that was crimped over to make the pan shank and the pan post was a one piece, the one in your picture looks like a Hector style of post with one side broken off. I have a #1 & #1 1/2 Hector with that style chain and ring, so that is probably what your trap was, of course without the pan, you can call it what ever you want, lol. I have and also seen other smaller sized Newhouse, Hawley & Norton and Sargent traps with the P.S.& W style chain with the cast 8 link and cast ring and wedge on them also.
You can blame me for losing sleep over the Union Hardware as long as I can blame you for losing sleep over looking for a Sargent style #1 cast pan Crescent, you'll find one before I do. But, that's what makes the trap collecting so much fun, for me anyway, is the looking and searching and the ultimate finding one. If you end up with too many traps, you can always send them my way.
