An old friend of mine was giving an old bear trap with S Newhouse No 5 Kenwood Ny on the pan. Trap has chain and swivel and is in very good, if not excellent, condition. He isn't going to sale it but was curious about its value, and when it was made. Also wanted to know if some type of setter was used to assist in setting this trap. Thank you, Al.

See if you can get a few pictures and put them on. There is a wide variable on the price of the Kenwoods as there are many different factors to take into consideration. The Kenwood period lasted from around 1888 all the way up to 1905 as well as, the OC period and the Kennwood period overlapped for a decade. The earlier Kenwoods will have Trip Hammered springs and the later models will have Machined springs. You will find the earlier ones with Flat outer faced jaws and the later ones with beveled outer faced jaws. There will be the three line OC spring stamps as well as Arched Kenwood spring stamps on the later model machined spring Kenwood #5s. There are many factors to look at when trying to price the Kenwood Bear Traps, as well as if ROME is on the trap.

Your friends trap is surprisingly nice. I think it has some paint on it (the black).
If it is paint it would most likely make the trap worth more if you remove it. Use a stripper product NOT a wire brush.
Spring stamping should be there on top the springs about half way down.
There also seams to be some dirt or other debris in the lettering of the pan. The pan should show alot better if you clean that out too. In the condition its in Ide say its worth atleast 700$ and quite possibly more depending on what lettering shows up on it.

What a NICE TRAP. Looking at your trap, it appears to have the 1 & 3/4 inch wide baseplate, and assuming that IT DOES, it will have the three line OC spring stamp, an going by what I have bought the #15 Kenwood and sold the #15 Kenwood with machined springs with the three line OC stamp. would value your trap in the $1100 to the $1650 range. Nice trap, and remember. there are always those out there that like to low ball you and Try to steal a trap or two when they CAN.
