ab, I mix pork and deer liver, grind it up and let it set a week in the warm part of the barn. Then add Pauls bait mix to it. Sorry, don't remember any other recipe. Hope this helps.

this is nick whysinkys from his book, nick has more liver formulas than wiley carroll had getter formulas and thts going a ways but this is the one in the book, the formula is almost the same as the old far north fomula in hundreds of fur fish and game articles so is a common one, 3 quarters of a gallon of ground beef liver mush, not pork, beef, its supposed to rot down in the sun for a full season, its a liquid bait, in the 3 quarters of a gallon of liver is mixed one quart of glycerine, enough sodium benzoate to keep it from gassing one or two ounces of beaver castor, one or two ouinces of real muskrat musk, one or two ounces of ambrette musk, one quarter of an ounce of the best tonquin musk you can get from a supplu dealer, be forewarned, make at your own risk, watch carefully during the ageing, mixing, pouring, and storing process for pressure build up, this base can be changed twenty one different ways from sunday.

none

Earlier in December I used deer liver. Caught a couple fox on it but the coon tore it up.

Big Ab: I kept wild trap caught coyotes in captivity for many years for urine collection. Coyotes generally did not like beef liver and many would starve themselves and let beef liver rot away wilthout even touching it. On the other hand, every coyote loved pork liver and would devour it from mid air if a piece was thrown in their pens. Species liver may all smell the same to us but those coyotes could smell the difference instantly as a piece was flying through the air into the pen. As long as I'm on the subject, fish were the same way. Even though fish all just smells fishy to to us the coyotes could make a determination whether to eat it or not while it was flying through the air, devouring some species while ignoring others. Ace

Thanks Asa for the info. While we are on the subject, what fish did they like better? Did you ever try to feed the liver to fox?

Smelt was the the favored fish for both fox and coyote, they just apeared to drive them crazy with enthusiasm with suckers coming in a close second. Fish like perch, bluegill, pike, bourbot, carp would be eaten very little or none at all. This applied to both coyote and red fox. Didn't have any grey fox around my parts in those days to experiment with. Ace

Yes, big ab, sorry I missed answering that but fox didn't like the beef liver any better than coyotes, always reluctant to accept it. Ace

thanks alot that is good info. Why do you think that this type bait works for some people? Maybe just a curiosity or is it the ingredients that are added to it?

My Grandfather use to make a bait with deer and pork liver, all he added as ground allspice... it gave it a sweet smell...

It worked on grays best, as I remember... but we didn't have coyotes then... still don't have many, yet...

Good Luck and God Bless you and yours,

It could be the ingredients that are working better than the beef liver base. However, I'll bet from my experiences that those same trappers would get a lot better set response from fox and coyote if they used pork liver or deer liver in the base. I believe it is the little un-noticed things that seperate outstanding lures from average working lures. Ace

big ab ask..how have your results been with it ? Only been doing it for 40 years so it is still in the testing stage.. \:\) Use to use my own fox P, musk and lure ingredients but Pauls stuff is less money, and works just fine. PS: Good Luck.
