My son found one yesterday that was kind of different. We have a lot of distemper around, so dead skunks are almost a daily occurrence. We had a homeowner that had some skunk odor for an extended period of time, a couple weeks he said. He had a very accessible ,but large rear deck, at least 20 X 40 feet. We could easily smell the skunk when we pulled up, but after pulling some siding off and having a clear view under the deck, we still couldn't find it. The deck was elevated about 3 feet, so it was fairly easy to get a good view. My son decided to crawl under, to see if there was possibly a den it had gotten into and died . He finally yelled back that he had found it, but we weren't going to be real happy about where it was. Unknown to the homeowner there was an old well casing under there, flush with the ground and at least 40" in diameter and made out of tile. Down about 5-6 feet was the skunk floating belly up.... We pulled some deck boards so we could get a good look at it, and retrieve it from above without making too much of a mess. We tried to get it out in one piece, but it ended up falling apart, and we fabricated a net with a long handle to pretty much fish the parts out. When done we tried to check the depth of the well, and gave up at 10 + feet. We deodorized it as best we could, and the homeowner was going to cover it with plywood and blocks for a temporary solution. You never know what you are going to find in this business.
