I think it's better to use 160 conibears with the bait on the trigger.

As a youngster, I took out the family christmas tree and instead of throwing it away, stripped most of the limbs off and built a set similar to yours. (Yours actually looks better than mine did.)I caught several muskrats under the ice with it. Good luck!

I think it will work. I usely just put around a 15" stick on the end of a conibear and lower it into the hole. I put either an apple piece or a piece of a potato on the trigger. The stick lays horizintally across the top of the hole. Good luck.

You might try parsnips for bait. I've had limited success with apples, potatoes, carrots, radishes, etc. But it seems to me that rats just can't pass up parsnips! Of course it could be that different baits work better or worse depending on the area you're trapping.? Parsnips grow wild around northern Illinois, the tops look just like carrot tops and the roots just look like white carrots. My Dad & I usually just buy them at any grocery store(they're bigger than wild ones and are easier to stick on a coni-trigger).One other tip...I like to take my hatchet& shave the edges off of them it makes them brighter&they smell stronger that way.Good Luck!!!
