Have any of you guys tried this? I got a farmer by me that doesn't want me to use footholds or cable restraints so he suggested cage traps. Oh boy!

You should suggest to him, that he should try to cage trap those coyotes. he should not be suggesting nothing if your the trapper doing the work

Paul, I agree. >) trapdye, he's scared of his dogs getting into a foothold or cable restraint. I told him about 10 minutes ago once the yotes get the last 4 lambs he has the yotes will head to other parts.

I got a farmer by me that doesn't want me to use footholds or cable restraints so he suggested cage traps.
I have been getting feed back. It takes a while for the coyote to not be leary of a cage trap. By the time he gets accustomed and goes in it takes a while. Most calls tell me of the door coming down on their back and missing. That is why they call. Others can,t hold the animal when it is caught. Most of those is a weak trap used and the trapper doesn,t check his trap every day. That is the other problem, most cases several traps are best used, but a well built cage trap is expensive and bulky to move. Just the size alone draws inquisitive humans to get close messing up the set. Just got a call a while ago. The trap I suggested was over 400$ and was best used with live bait. The second one was more expensive. They couldn,t use live bait here in Ga. so I recommended they call David McCloud. They were scared of getting some one hurt. They had no idea as to how the methods could be used. David should get a call. It would be different if it was winter or the fire ants weren,t so bad here. It is hard to beat live bait with a cage.

People want us to take care of their coyote problems... so put the dang dogs up for a couple weeks so we can take care of business!!! I go through the same thing every year.

Ask more questions to reveal his real concerns. He is worried about the dogs getting caught, ask him what he thinks will happen if the dog gets caught and u will find his fear is not based on facts but lack of knowledge, F- false E- evidence A- appearing R- real If ur traps are modified and padded, tell him that he wants the dogs to get caught once in the trap so they will stay away from all traps, Trappers need to be salesmen. A salesman identifies a need and show the client how to fill that need, all an objection is, is a person saying I don't understand, Well, there u have okie wildlife controls first class on the art of closing the deal, Hope u enjoyed, . If u would like more tried and proven sales tactics to close more deals let me know,

Won't disagree with the others about educating the landowner on the truth versus myth, however my twist on this would be why not convince him on the cable restraints?
With a non entanglement setup and snares rigged with deer stops and relaxing locks this should be an easy sell. Not saying superior to footholds as the sets compared to trail snaring can alter success, but though we had both for a field study years ago now, we caught nearly 75% of the coyotes in MI approved cable restraints (snares). They had deer stops, a heavy washer lock that was further drilled out to really allow it to slip.
Caught more than a few dogs and they were always sitting right there like a dog on a leash. Caveat is the check times were always within 24 hours to assure no chew outs on the snare cable and we were bound to it for the research restrictions as well.
But, the snapping of the foothold and mechanics of it, always take folks to another place, yes you can teach them, but under the circumstances if you have some solid trails and areas where you could use the cable restraints why not go that route?
Better yet, if he literally has 4 lambs left tell him to build a paddock and secure them, not sure what you'd charge to catch the coyotes, but at the 4 lamb size flock, he's not holding much cash in terms of more losses at this point.
I realize remove the problem animal is the logical course for most producers, and if I had 30-100 lambs I'd likely be thinking the same thing, but 4? Seriously?
That is akin to some of the homes I see where folks have pigeon issues but it isn't anything more than a couple of birds on one little part of the roof and a few droppings. That person usually doesn't want to spend money on an exclusion of the whole house roof as it isn't a big enough damage to match the costs.
I'd say 4 lambs puts you in that realm, have you talked prices yet? For the live trap itself, plus trips to check it daily, etc.... Haven't heard an ag report lately but 4 lambs can't be ranking too awful high on the $$$ scale...

And do you get the customer to pay for the 25 or so raccoons that
you have to remove from the area to allow the coyotes to have an empty cage to get caught in? Paul, some cages can be set to where the trapper is less likely to catch a coon, possum, skunk, and grey fox sized animal. New stuff is being developed and refined all the time. Just to be clear it can be done with cages and I have made more than enough first night catches to dispell the notion that they need to get used to them. _________________________ Art, please tell us what you believe to be the best way to bait and set the cage trap for coyotes.
