Just how would you trap a deer? MB750? Net cannon? Giant box with a stick propped under it? Coyote on a cliff with an anvil?

I guess I'm a little surprised that you guys haven't seen deer traps. They are made with sheets of plywood and baited with corn and

hay usually. The back of the cage is woven fence, but when the deer springs the trap, a roll of tarp comes down and leaves the trap

in complete darkness. This really keeps the deer calm. There is no floor in the trap so the deer are moved to a transport cage which

butts up to the door of the trap and they are then taken to a food processor. The butchering is paid for by our state and the meat

distributed to the needy. Naturally, all of this equipment is heavy and is handled by a flatbed truck with a lift. The whole

operation is quite successful and I have personally seen many deer in traps. The trigger is a rope across the cage about thigh

high. Squirrels present a problem but a gap in the back wall lets them out. I did see one trap where a good sized hawk apparently

chased a gray squirrel into the traps and hit the rope hard enough to spring the trap. He looked pretty dumb sitting in there all

by himself.

Can't see them hiring anyone who isn't going to keep them above the board on the look and professional
level of outcome politically.

This type of job runs along the lines of thermal infrared hunting of hogs with gear only the military uses,
many may think "cool" very few will be qualified or able to perform this within the specs desired.

That should change over time but lots of details to get it right and be accepted for the bid.

I guess I'm more surprised that no one has brought up what would be required to do this in Minnesota. Do you need a nuisance license, out of state hunting license or is trapping license required and if so, is it possible for a nonresident to get one? I know that the lawsuit for nonresidents to buy trapping licenses lost, but I don't know a lot of the specifics with it aside from trapping being considered a recreational instead of commercial enterprise.

Yikes! Those nylon mesh traps look absolutely awful for deer. Complete darkness is the only way to keep a deer from losing its

sanity. Every time I have pulled back the tarp to see what's in the trap, I was very thankful for the chain link fencing that kept me

from having hoof prints all over my body. Just a little bit of light and those whitetails go crazy.

Used widely for research and live collaring in university and government work. Not without danger, know folks who have sustained serious kick injuries and WT deer are prone to capture myopathy.

Winks version is one way to go with boxes but depending on terrain and scenario the clover traps are more portable and offer advantages.

The only reason I know about the deer traps is because a bunch of my customers have them on their property in the late fall and

winter. My buddy Al wanted to see them and we went to the city offices where they are made and stored. The city employees were very

happy to explain everything about their deer program and seemed to be proud of their work. They use a small 4 wheel drive flatbed,

with a small crane on it. I imagine that handy machine keeps back-breaking labor to a minimum.

I suspect that once they see the lack of success from trapping-only efforts, they will wake up (if they are properly informed) that night shooting would be the most effective method for population control. Live trapping only works when the deer are highly motivated by hunger. When natural food sources are scarce, you will begin to have some success, and would be worth doing in areas where you can't shoot.

I've also seen the deer stands that were erected for night shooting so it's not just trapping. What amazed me is the success that has

been had with trapping. The cages are set right in the trails and deer are caught even when food is not that scarce.

I have caught deer in Clover traps in urban areas, and failed miserably trying it in rural environments. It is worth doing to supplement other methods. The benefit is that the trap works all day and night so I don't have to.
