My uncle was in town this weekend from Washington state. His yard is infested with mountain beaver, that are digging many burrows. Anyone familiar with them and have suggestions on control methods? I had never heard of them. Thanks.

Scot

They are Aplodontias.

I had certainly never heard of them. Here is what one webpage said.

"Mountain beavers (Aplodontia rufa, Fig. 1) are considered by many taxonomists to be the world's most primitive living rodent species. They are not really beavers, but were so named because they gnaw bark and cut off limbs in a manner similar to true beavers.

Mountain beavers live in moist forests, on ferny slopes, and are occasionally found in damp ravines in urban areas. Their worldwide range is the coastal lowlands and coastal mountains of southern British Columbia (from the Fraser Valley to the Cascade mountains), western Washington, western Oregon, and south into California."

We call them things boomers. They eat bark like rabbits. Lady called me once and said she had beavers eating her trees. I showed up and it was a completely fenced in yard. Zero way for beavers to get in the yard. It was boomers.

Fish, I used a mix of RBGs and even a colony trap in one area because of the way the tunnel system was open under some brush. I think it was an exposed section of tunnel I dropped the colony trap in. To be honest, I thought they were large gophers of some sort. Or RUS'.

Well don't that just figure? I've heard of them, probably because I'm considered the most primitive living human by my grandkids!

If I recall, the lady had her landscaper protect the trees with some landscaping mesh in order to stop the damage while the buggers were being caught. It worked. There were both young and older trees which the mesh protected well. I suppose that weed cloth would work. Or buy one of them dogs that likes to dig. Lol.
