Started snaring recently and would like to try and make some. How much savings is there?

What kind of lock do you like and why. In Ohio we have to have a relaxing lock. What styles are considered relaxing?

Do the small S-hooks really work to prevent harm to deer?

Do you always swivel the end or is a loop enough??

What locks would you stay away from>

Thank you.

for a relaxing lock this is what I use, homemade.

this is a 1/16th loaded snare for fox showing how cable is threaded through the existing hole in the washer, I set for entanglement, but my "locks" are legal.

Started snaring recently and would like to try and make some. How much savings is there? Lots if you are using reused parts, not so much if you buy all your components new. I recommend buying pre-made then after a year or two of saving the parts, build your own.

What kind of lock do you like and why. In Ohio we have to have a relaxing lock. What styles are considered relaxing? Any washer lock will be OK I'm sure. Probably slim locks and any non-mechanical locks but I'm NOT sure.

Do the small S-hooks really work to prevent harm to deer? Yes they will release leg caught deer, probably most bigger neck caught ones as well.

Do you always swivel the end or is a loop enough? I always swivel all my snares except ones set in fences and on killpoles.

What locks would you stay away from? Snare shops Penny Locks

Thank you. You're welcome.

FOR 3/64 7x7 mink/rat and cat snares i like the BMI mini& have just made up some with the micro lock and like the results thus far.next the 1X19 1/16 loaded with a slim lock with an in line swivel and an extn.cable,I also use 3/32 7x7 with a Richart loc with a inline swvl. for beaver at times. If not on a drowning rig i like to have a 10'rig(min.)

the slim lock aint a relaxing lock ... it locks and doesn't back off ... unless it's been used numerous times or the lil tab has been pryed open ever so slightly

Possum Skinner, The Political Correct turm "Relaxing Lock" DOES NOT mean that they back up.
A "RELAXING LOCK" Stops closing when the animal stops pulling

Don't all locks stop closing when the animal stops pulling? How can a snare keep closing if nothng is pulling to tighten it? A lock may drop on a loaded snare but will stop when it comes in contact with hair. When the animal pulls it tightens up in my mind.

We use killikg snares here and I make my own . I buy the 1/16 snare wire and buy the lead wire to attach to the snare . The rest I make . I make the furrels out of 14 ga. electric fenceing wire . I bought 1/4 mile for less than 20 bucks .I use a bicycle spoke about 4 or 5 inckes long in the drill and slowly wrap the wire on the spoke I put the end of the spoke in a snall hole in a peice of 2 x 4 held in the vice .This holds the spoke stable so the wire will wrap around it . .This makes a long strip of furrels . Then I just cut the disired length with my pliers .That makes the furrel for the end of the snare at the lock .I use an 8 inc peice of 5/16 rod to make the furrel to join the snare to the lead . I make my locks fron a nickle . The 90 degree locks are $.25 ea. so I save $.20 there . Snare furrels are $.15 I have a 1/4 mile of them . In this neck of the woods the premade snares will cost #18.00 A doz . I get 3 doz for 20 bucks . I would say it is definately cheaper to make my own . That's the cat snares . The coyot snares I'll get 2 1/2 doz . The snares are a bit larger . I made my own snares for years . Part of the enjoyment of trapping .
