Found this Newhouse # 3 at a flea market. The trap has Newhouse Oneida Community on top of the spring. The pan has some wear. I hope the chain is correct on it. Thanks for ant insight. Kevin

Here's my two cents Kevin... The pan is interesting, Looks like the Newhouse "big" letters stamped over the Newhouse "small" letters. What is the measurement across the pan? The springs look to be the early style with a tighter bend too. Are the spring stamps about halfway from the eye to the bend? The chain may be correct but too Me a cast chain might go better with that trap.....Dale

Dale, the pan is 2 3/8 across. The stamping on the spring is 2 inches from eye and bend.

Those measurements make me think it is an early #3 with the small pan. With that information a collector with more knowledge than me could give you a pretty close date on when Newhouse made that trap. Thanks for posting some pictures, I find that pan quite interesting.... Dale

Kevin, Is that pan 2 3/8" or 2 5/16"? Dale is right, that is a some what early Newhouse. It has the tighter bent springs, which are earlier but it has the square corner jaw posts, taller jaws and round eye swivel that are just a few years latter. I think the chain is original but the trap was made at a time when the cast figure 8 chain was still being used on some traps. I would date your trap to right around 1885. Nice trap, Dean

Guys when you say "earlier" ....how old what year approximately was it made? These traps impress me more and more....top notch.

I was wrong on the pan. It measures 2 5/16. Thanks for the information. I paid 40 for it. I might just put it on the wall.
