I was able to make the first trip out to the cabin on November 16th, pretty early, so I just brought a load of bait and other supplies into the cabin and set a few marten sets around the cabin lake. I had 12'' of good ice on my lake, but the river was still open and bigger lakes had lots of water on them, so I didn't venture out anywhere.
I was surprised to find fresh bear tracks this late on the lake. He walked up next to my cabin, sniffed around, batted some empty metal drums, and left some paw prints on the side of my cabin. I assume the bear fence did it's job, because the only damage he caused was to my spare door hanging on the back wall. I'm sure glad that's the door he took exception to.

Second trip in just after thanksgiving I started making sets. Got in about half my marten gear and a hand full of wolverine and wolf sets.

There was a full moon on the 2nd of December, so I decided to take the Elan up on the ridge behind the cabin around 3am. I knew there were caribou up there, and thought I might get lucky and find wolves taking advantage of the moon. I also had half a mind to try some lynx calling down in the flats in rabbit country. About half way up the ridge I ran into fresh bear tracks again! This guy seriously needs to go to bed... I quickly forgot about using any sort of distress call that night. I got up on top of the ridge, made a few wolverine sets in the rocks and started howling. Almost immediately I had a response, but the only wolves around seemed to be several miles away off in the river bottom, and I wasn't able to draw them up the hill. I suspect they were enjoying their own caribou already. The caribou are plentiful around my country right now.

In all not a bad start, 7 marten and a wayward mink who found his way into a marten set on the lakeshore.
