I got this one and it came attached to an old #4 Gibbs coilspring. It may not be anything special but thought I would post it to get some opinions. It is not your run of the mill as the tips appear to be hammer pointed instead of cut and they are precisely curved. The heavy duty Newhouse type swivel that it is hooked up with makes me think it is old also. I seem to recall a Newhouse drag but I probably couldn't be that lucky. If someone has a picture of the Newhouse drag(s) please post for future reference. Any thoughts on mine?

Your drag is well made but not Newhouse. Here are the Newhouse drags for the #4 1/2.

4 prong

tight twist

square rebar

loose twist

Great info and pictures. I do have some drags with twisted shanks so now I will have to look at them.

Thank you!

The connector on the ring of the 4-prong (I don't know what it's called).
I haven't seen but a few of those. Shame they didn't stamp the 4-prong

I like that 4-prong one. Love to have them on some traps.

That is a picture that speaks a thousand words. An awful lot of 4 1/2 Newhouse information right there.

Did they make drags for other size traps?

Oneida Community only made the #4 1/2 Wolf trap with a drag as a stock feature. They did make a smaller drag, sold as a Fox size drag but it was only sold as an accessory. They advertise the wolf drag as 8" and the Fox drag as 7". I have never seen a Fox size drag but I am always looking. And, other companies made drags as well.

Page from the 1913 catalog, No. 44.

Could this be the fox model?

DiggerDale, I do not believe that those are Newhouse drags. I have a set of three sizes of that drag but I don't know who made them. The twist is too tight and the Newhouse drag does not have the sharp kink in the point ends.

I wasn't holding my breath on that one. But some of the old advertisements will show things a little different than what was actually manufactured.

I have learned to pay attention when I come across these drags, Because there may be something interesting in the mix.

Here's a picture from a reprinted Oneida Community LTD add.. Date unknown. Shows what looks like a later 4 1/2 drag, might be smaller but can't tell.

Dale, Your photo is from Oneida Community's 1920 catalog. The Fox drag is advertised as 7" and the Wolf drag 8".
