Does any one know if grizzly bears like to eat cedar sidding? I put some on my camp this spring and the grizzlies ripped it back off. They did not bother the regular plywood sidding only the cedar. So I'm wondering if they like to chew on the the cedar.

Was the cedar raw or treated? The coastal browns around here go absolutely batty over petroleum products and plastics.
Maybe T-111 would be a better choice.

Like Mike said, they are known to be attracted to many ingredients in coatings, so if it was stained or sealed that could explain. But I will add that my dog prefers chewing on dry cedar to any other type of wood, so it might have some attraction of it’s own. OR there’s a chance that you got some bugs under the siding, and the bears were just naturally grubbing.

I don't think there were bugs, but not rilling that out. I think they just liked the cedar or something in the stain. It was second hand siding that I got for free.

My considerable experience with bears is, they are all hooligans. Don't care what their age is, they get bored, and into trouble. Teenagers, one and all.

Just doing what I want now.

I had an electric bear fence on the house. Maybe it got shocked, got mad and wanted revenge. Weather proofing with unsullied was a bad call I admit that now.

Probably a bad choice if you have any porcupine around.
Bottom line, if you keep a cabin out in bear, or rodent country nothing should surprise you...

I remember hearing once where western red cedar posts had been used for something and bears were tearing them to pieces. Apparently if bears aren't accustomed to red cedar, they are then attracted to it.

On the other hand.........cedar is repellent to insects as are moth balls. Moth balls also have some repellent quality towards bears. Interesting that bears are attracted to WRC

Certainly not Grizzlies here, but I have been asked several years by the DNR to get some bear hunters in an area where the Bears were literally destroying the wood base posts for the overland heavy electric transmission lines. The posts were treated and that was the draw they told me. Maybe your siding has that same chemical mixture in the finish product? Sorry I don't recall exactly what the creosote product was.
Did go look at the damage, for lowly black bears I was amazed.

After 40 years of using spruce trees to make trail marker tripods on our open country trails BLM gave us some cedar pole ones to use about half dozen years ago. Never saw so many tripods tipped over and chewed up in my life. Usually isn't even an issue with spruce poles but those cedar ones they love (or hate).

I can attest to bears liking the petroleum products. Years ago a black bear broke into a friends garage and ate a 5gal bucket of pavement sealer. Funny because the tracks are still on the floor and the window sill and side of the garage where it made is break in and escape.
