Not as bad as I could be, not as good as I should be.

What about when you have a couple inches of frost in the ground? Do you need to drill pilot holes for any type of earth anchor??

I'm in southern Missouri and wolf fangs are my go-to anchor. Super stakes are good but I get tired of cleaning the hole out.

Super Stakes on Chain, so if the anchor doesn't go in the whole way to the connection at the trap chain, the chain will lay nicely in the trap bed.

Here is my 2 cents, worth about half a cent in today's market.....

What you are trying to catch?

Reason I ask is this: I drive fangs in NE Pa clay/shale/bedrock without any problems. It isn't the thing on the end that is giving us problems, it's the way the cable is connected to the fang.

We have a tool for getting fangs out of the ground (yep, I'm cheap, I save every one). The ones we lose are because the ferrule slips or the cable breaks. Not losing $1.50 for catching a $2 pelt.

Not a problem for grinners, stinkers, trash pandas and reds. Coyotes? Only trusting chain. Not losing a big dog on a 3 cent ferrule.

IMO, better to over anchor your trap to what you are trying to catch, then to have to post a "shoulda, coulda, woulda" post here.

Redneck I’ve went to putting a twelve inch cable together with 4 to 6 inches of chain. That way if you hit something hard after you get past the first foot your good to go. I still use eighteen inches of cable and chain even though I’m sure twelve will hold any coyote in the soil we have !

Just got back from driving cable restraints in with fangs for reds. Been in the teens and less here for over 2 weeks now (-2 this am, high of 11 today). 3 lb hammer and set them with no problem. No pilot hole, just start pounding.

I make sure to pull pretty hard on them though. If the ground is frozen down far enough, your fang may not "set", and just slide back up the same slot it went down in.

Has anyone ever lost a coyote to a properly hammered or crimped ferrule? I've caught several very angry bears in Duke #3's that held with 3/32 cable and hammered aluminium ferrules.

Wolf fangs work for me here in Nova Scotia. Tried HD berkshires and they just straightened out the tip even with a pilot hole. Wolf fangs are fairly cheap too.

I carry a old drill bit works great even when they are frozen up.

I trap the appalachian mountains and I used wolf fangs and cable last year and they worked pretty good but I broke several off trying to pull them back out, so I went to using the super stakes with chain and I've been really happy with them. The only problem is cleaning the dirt back out of the hole so you can drive it next time
