Anybody have any reviews or experience using cookie cutters for trap bedding in clay type soil? I normally use a brick hammer to dig out trap bed but had surgery on my hand.....didn't realize how much I used both hands digging until I tried to bed a trap! I was thinking of trying one of the cookie cutters to help dig my trap beds for MB 550's this year! If anyone has any suggestions or experience with them ...I would appreciate your experience?

I bought it. it works, slower than the hammer and it's too heavy to lug around.. I even quit carrying my trowel. They both stay in the truck. As do other tools.
100% of all my trap beds are dug with the sod blade on my hammer
I also use my hand to pull out the dirt.
Get a auger for your drill it takes care of most dirt holes. The rest are mouse holes made with the driver.
Good luck

Thanks for the info! I am not sure i would use one long term as Im use to digging them with a brick hammer, but had operation on one of my hands and thinking it would help with bedding until it is back to normal! I have never used one and wasn't sure if they worked well or not! I do have auger for drill and use it to do hole sets...its the ticket for holes for sure! Thanks

I bought a nice one and it does work if the ground is soft. It is heavy and by the time I have it pounded in the ground I could have one dug and the stake driven in. I went back to just the trapping hammer and Pulaski for tough ground.

If you can't use both hands the I would say definitely don't get the cutter. It's a cool tool no doubt, but I have never used it without holding it with the opposite hand that I swing the hamer with. It's always been a two handed tool.
Now I live in a red dirt state, however I also trap in the sand bottoms of the river. And still have to hold it with the opposite hand.
Maybe a heavier 4lb sledge with a flat blade will be best for your one arm work. Plus it will give you a good workout and you will have some catching up to do when your hand recovers.

As far as I'm concerned I bought one and it's a waste of time and money. I'm 78 years old and I can dig and bed a trap with a trowel faster than with a cookie cutter. The only thing it's good for is a door stop.

I bought a cookie cutter from redneck trapper. It is very well built and I was very happy with it. They work great in the early season before the frost as long as you are trapping with truck or atv. I agree with the previous posts about the extra weight. So if I walk my line it stays in the truck.

Thanks for the info! I may just try to keep digging with one hand! Its killing me not getting traps in the ground and seeing coyotes on my cameras running around! Thought a cutter might be the ticket for my situation but sounds like it would just be something that ends up laying around and money wasted.

I would have to disagree with y'all I got mine three seasons ago now for the 550 it's the ticket the trap near beds itself when you set it down in the bed bc it's so tigh ground is soild all around and up to the trap I've seen less dug up traps an have had excellent results using it

Too heavy in trap bag but real negative is it slows me down to much. Probably not a problem for trappers that set a few traps but when you are pounding in 50 or 60 per day it's not feasible.

Even 15 in one day and it adds more than an hour to your day. But I could see it working for early season soft ground or well disked farm land.

Just another gimmick In my opinion. With a correctly built hammer you can chop out a trap bed In seconds.

I was given one to try out - In Eastern Montana a lot of the ground is so hard it is comparable to almost being froze. Once I got it pounded in the only thing it did was make a outline of the shape. The clay mix soil did not lift out. There is no way it would do any better in frozen ground - the edges would mushroom over first.
I guess they might work in soft soil but it is quicker and easier for me to chisel out a round / square shape with ears. And less weight to pack. smile

I agree with Beav above.

I don't get all these negative comments weight time and ability to cut through ground is really no problem here weight is what 3lbs time really ? Im a lot quicker using the cutter for sure a really efficient tool in my pack basket and as long as I keep the edges sharp with a fat wheel 4inch angle grinder I have no problems cutting through frozen ground the only time I have problems is when I try to bed a trap in strippin country and its all loose shell rock that case I just dig a bowl an bed the trap but I just have to say again what a great tool this has been for me on my line this is my opinion just couldn't believe all the negative comments about it can't really see where they are coming from but everyone is trapping different places different terrian what works for me dosnt work for the next guy and so on

The tiniest tree root running near the surface of the ground makes them almost useless. I was excited to get one but soon discovered I used my hammer to cut roots the cookie cutter wouldn't.
