I put out 3 beaver and two otter carcasses 14 days ago with a trail cam on them. The beaver carcasses are down to bone the otter carcasses have not been touched. I mean not touched at all, not eaten, not pecked, not moved from their on their back position I put them in. I have over 1700 pictures from the trail cam and not one cat, coyote, fox, hawk nor crow touched the otter carcasses. Your experiences ?

I think every region is different and all you can do is try. Growing up in PA a hog would lay there and rot and nothing would touch it, a sheep or a goat would be gone in a day or two. Up here in AK it is just the oppisite. I have no problems putting otters out, I got about 60 two years ago from a fellow trapper they got eaten.

They get eaten here but they are the last to go.When times are lean in late winter,meat is meat.That said,there is lots of better bait than an otter carcass.

Around here they will just lay there and mummify. Not even the buzzards or possums touch them.

Eagles, ravens, and magpies all eat on the otters I dump.

Same here. I put them out with my coyote carcasses at wolf/coyote baits and they get cleaned up.

Not much interest shown toward them here even when chopped into chunks.

Although they are the last to get cleaned up, I also put them out at wolf/coyote bait stations.

Pen owner asked me to dump my carcasses in his coyote enclosure. Next load of coyotes to him he told me, "No more otter carcasses, please."

Around here, not even maggots nor bacteria eat otter carcasses. They just dry up solid and ooze black stuff like a zombie from The Walking Dead.

I should clarify. I would only use otter flesh in a tide pool set for wolves. The carcasses mostly go back to the wild for the sole purpose of bird attractant.

I've notice the same thing as just about everyone else.
I really do wonder why nothing touches them. Sometimes I think us trappers observe things in nature that no one else ever notices.
Someone should study why nothing touches otter carcasses, who knows, it may lead to a cure for cancer.

I don't believe half of the stuff on the picture box. Anyone here ever eat it or put it in the smoker- otters eat seafood so how bad can it be?

It is bad enough that hawks, owls and maggots are the only thing I ever see eating it. Possums and buzzards here will not touch an otter carcass.

Natives in the far north eat it.

Wish I had seen this sooner. Had a otter laying outside the shed. Something was eating on it and dragging it around. Could have put a camera on it. Next time.

Only thing I have ever seen touch an otter is ravens.
