I always release the female red I catch. Reds aren't as common any more with the coyotes over running. Anyways I caught and dispatched a male red a few weeks ago in -8* weather. No foot damage from the 1.75 , but the foot was hard as a rock, froze solid. If I had released the fox would it have lost that foot ? -Thanks

Mods, delete if this is a "no no" topic.

kyron4. You can buy a medicine at your locale co-op and give them a shot to help. Many years back when I was live trapping I used it with great results. But it only worked down to about 28 degrees. Don't remember the name. Digger

Dexamethasone is a type of steroid used for many applications and treatments. It is and can be used for conditions such as that mentioned of inflammation as a result of frost/ soft freeze temperature exposure to a degree.

However the treatment success of the material is ultimately determined by how much blood flow restriction has taken place for how long. It works well if conditions are favorable such as I described. It is helpful but it isn't magic by any means.

Off set jaws won't make a difference.
If the foot Is froze solid that animal Is going to lose that foot. Better off to kill It and skin It.

When I trapped for the live market we covered the traps or sprung them If we were going to have freezing weather.
