I understand he has a market for felt and is buying beaver. Has anyone sold beaver to him lately?

This year, I’d be giving them to anybody who’d take them I’m afraid. We’ve only sold to them once before. Had a dozen early coon scraped and dried. We averaged about $7. No one else bothered to scrape or dry. They averaged about $4.

Groney paid $8 or $9 for the grown ones last year green frozen and $3 for smaller ones. They really prefer them to be at least 25 lbs but never seen them refuse young of the year. They just pay less for them. No way I am going to invest the time and effort to flesh, board and dry and then take off the board for $2 more per beaver. The only way I put them up in the current market is if I am going to get some tanned.

Your mileage may vary..............

On my way to NTA convention last year had 10 spring beaver. Stop at groneys to sell. He didn't even look at them. Threw them on the scales and said this is what i'll give. Came out a 14.50 adv. Had 5 fall beaver that that were 40 to 50 #. Groneys buyer gave 16.50 adv, so for 5 to 6 $ i'll put up beaver. With today's market, one thin spot, or bite marks and you have a hatter. So unless you have a perfect skin i think groneys prices are fare !

Groeny has been a good buyer for this market, to me because ......

I can let my son practice skinning beaver and still get money for them, that being said, the really big ones go to the tannery as I can make more selling them tanned

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell

Any beaver Northern trappers catch from today for the next two months should be sold skinned stretched and dried for fur skin purposes, not for hatters (unless they are damaged of course). You will get enough more $$$ to make it worthwhile. That's because I'm going under the assumption that anyone willing to catch beavers under ice is NOT a lazy T-shirt trapper. Shearing beaver skins are going to be in short supply this year.

I sold a bunch of skinned only (green) early beaver yesterday. Blanket sized $10 each. Everything else was $4 each. Most were early but the bigger ones were first week of December caught. I’m not real happy but I didn’t have to scrape and dry.

Green, early to prime 4x coon went for $5 each. In fact, since all were 2x to 5x and late October to December 1st coon, I was a little disappointed but the average was $5. Skinned, scraped and dried, 3x and bigger, without blemishes are going for $7-$8.

We had 1 green skinned Dec 1st otter. The offer was $24. It was withdrawn from sale.

Since everything was green, I can’t fault the buyer. It is what it is and we knew that going into the season.

The question should be:" How profitable is that tanned beaver market?"

The answer is: "More profitable than $10 beaver." Huge market for $10 beaver, for what that's worth. frown

I have been hearing otter is down this year. I got $40 last year. $25 sounds about right. The $100 to $80 otter days are long gone.

Yes, but tanning, making, and shipping a 40"x 30" willow hooped beaver can be a pain.

There is the pain of trapping and skinning and selling beaver for $10 averages and there is the pain of value added processing and marketing. Which hurts worse?
