Denning areas can be many places. Brush piles, under old outbuildings and foundations, rock piles, old groundhog burrow areas and many fringe brushy areas.

Put out some of your best canine sets and you will usually catch a few.

Not sure in NC? Here in Central NY if you notice something that has been digging up the lawn for grubs, it's likely a skunk. Also check those areas where you see the roadkills if you can, might be another skunk around.

Looks like you and your partner are doing well. Post pics on how the season went, please... Good Luck!

Bob is right. I mite add that skunks fall into blind set real easy. If you find a trail coming out from under something, you can easily catch them in a blind set. Foot trap or body grip

Anywhere you have a jackpot bait if there are skunks around they will be either living in it or very near it.

Oh yea,I forgot you got coons and possums down there. They might chase the skunks off a baitpile.
Skunks like rotten smelling stuff, that a lot of other animals aren't interested in,but I guess possums do too.

I've been trying to get a skunk for the last five years. We have them, I smell them, see them dead on the road. Going to try more brushy areas around good water sources next year.

I trapped 4 skunks last year when they starting digging up my freshly planted Norway Spruce plugs. I had heard that if you lung shoot them rather than head shoot them they won't spray so I decided to use Dog Proofs baited with some old canned salmon I had. The first 3 didn't spray when dispatched but the 4th one did so even that isn't fool proof.

Find the path. Dig a hole. Bed your trap real close. Drop a hard boiled egg in the hole. Add some of Jameson's Grubstake back of hole. If a skunk walks by and does not dig out the trap he is yours.
Of course you will get the possum, coon, fox, and an occasional coyote also. Hard boiled eggs are amazing and do not need to be rotted down.

Some places maybe don't have as many skunks. If you set 30 places (coyote/fox) with 2 traps per spot, you will catch 15-20 skunks up here where I live. When I went to offset jawed traps, I didn't hold near as many skunks or coon, but the remake was still a good set .

I'd love to have that kind of skunk population. I've only caught 4 this year. I don't really know why but I love fooling with them little critters. I've been getting almost as excited to see one in a trap as a coyote or fox.
