Ok, so let's say that it's the end of the season and it's time to pull traps. What do you all do with your earth anchors?
I dug out two super stakes today. Man, that wasn't easy.

I too have been using quick links.
Unfortunately a tractor isn't an option for me.
As for the handyman jack, you're literally talking about a tractor jack?

Rednecktrapper those look good and I like the design. One question tho. How thick is the tubing? I have one similar just with the angle iron on the bottom and mine has a nice sweep to the tubing from pulling hard stakes. I've been looking for one that has a longer handle on it cause a standard one hurts my back when they are in tight. I'll be looking on your site soon. I've built them with both 1/8" wall and 3/16" wall. I imagine 1/8" wall will hold up well in a more loose soil, but guys in clay, or those trappers that are just plain hard on equipment maybe the 3/16" wall is better. The 3/16" wall does add some weight to the puller. I had built one of each wall thickness for myself, but just sent my 1/8" wall puller to a trapper on here to see if he could bend it up.

Thanks everyone. Redneck, if you have those at the PA convention, and I'm able to get there, I'll be picking one up.

Redneck, I have to go down to Harrisburg for some agency training for 2 to 3 weeks in the spring. Maybe I could get together with you sometime then and check out the goods.

I bought a stake puller from F&T at the NY convention . I can't find the catalog and can't remember what they call it but it has been one of the BEST trapping purchases i've ever made . Its got a big c shaped notched bottom with a braced metal bar coming off the bottom.I use chain superstakes and rebar . The notch fits the rebar very well and I put a 30 or 40 P nail through a link of the chain below the j hook , span the notch with the nail and pull back for the superstakes. If the ground is soft I carry a piece of scrap 5/4 PT decking to set the puller on so it doesn't sink into the ground . THIS THING WORKS ! No back strain . The only thing I would change is making the bar you pull on longer but its easy to slip a piece of pipe over it like a breaker bar to give a longer pull . I just gave a solid beating- or maybe I took a solid beating from the bulletproof puller that Rednecktrapper sent me. When I get my act together I will post some pictures. I could not bend the puller and I am positive that J-hooks and 3/32 cable and twist link chain (the kind that comes on a Victor #2) will break before the puller will bend. O and the frozen ground certainly doesn't help. But the puller certainly holds up its end of the bargain! Maybe you are just "TOO STRONG", I think I saw you pop a "J" hook & a cable.

Jerry Jr. from the forums met me today and brought his puller. Man, they just popped right out. I'll never be without one again, that's for sure.
Now, to find the best one is the new task.

I dug out two super stakes today. Man, that wasn't easy. Mine are very hard to get into the shale that I trap on. I carry bolt cutters and just cut the "J" hook. Next time I want to set that location my stake is already there.

I dug out two super stakes today. Man, that wasn't easy. TB1, the fastest and easiest way I’ve found to pull super stake earth anchors from unfrozen ground is with a DeWALT drill & a 1½" auger. Drill down right next to the chain, then pull the anchor. It only takes 6-8 seconds from start to finish; and you’re on to the next trap. I haven’t picked up a puller since I tried this method for retrieving earth anchors.

Thanks Tejas, I like.that option. That auger can also be used for other purposes.
The chain doesn't wrap around the auger or anything?

The chain doesn't wrap around the auger or anything? You Betcha! It’s a fine line staying close to the chain without catching it. Extend the chain to one side and push on the trap with your foot to keep the chain tight while you drill. If you happen to wrap it on the auger, just reverse the drill, then push the chain back to one side and keep it tight as you redrill the same hole. Apply pressure to the side of the hole opposite the chain to avoid wrapping again. The less loose dirt left in the hole after drilling down, the easier it will be to pull the anchor. Make sure that when you drive your anchors you drive them straight down, and not at an angle. That way you can drill straight down the chain to the anchor for easy removal. It takes a few times to get the hang of it, but once you do you can pull a line really fast.

For what few trap that I have moved around I have been marking my anchors with flagging tape to pull later once the ground thaws. I have a bar with a chain hook that I pull with.

I use a 4ft piece of steel water pipe from lowes. Screw a T on it and a then a foot or shorter piece on each side. Weld a loop with a hook on it about 1/4 way down. Then put the hook through the chain and pull up. Some get stuck if the anchor catches a big root. Its heavy but works. X2
