Last week I started a post about "Extreme cold weather in the south". And everyone commented on how it would shut down the coon movement. Well last Tuesday it was 18* and yesterday it was 65*. So yesterday after work I had just enough time to bait up and re-set a dozen traps. 3 boxes and 9 DP's. This morning it was a pleasant 38*, Ran my traps before I went to work, and I had 3 nice coons. 2 in DP's, and one in the box. I think I will set another dozen DP's this afternoon and drop out a few more boxes and see how they move the rest of the week. Looks like they are moving around a little bit looking for a meal now that it has warmed up.

I've had 8 DP's out since Saturday with zero activity. 4 are in a new location with sign and the other 4 are in a proven location. But I've caught 24 coons and 14 possum in the general area since November. 62 total nest raiders counting those taken by hunters and what I've caught. Guess it's time to move to another area.

I'm seeing Raccoons on my cams. 1st time in a few weeks. They are definitely hungry. But it's past their prime now, so I'll let them live another season.

Just a weekend trapper...

Unfortunately, we don't have the fur market down here due to our warmer weather. "just the way it is". So I have to find folks that will buy them fresh off the back of the truck. What we call " on the hoof". I've got 5 or 6 folks on stand by that are good customers, and have money in hand. If we continue to have cool temps, then I can trap them till end of February. On a positive note, I had 3 more this morning. All in DP's. I could have a good week for a "part timer"...!

How much are you getting unskinned/skinned ? I've give away most of those I've caught but have 4 skinned in the freezer.

I'm a " small time / part time trapper". I set traps after work, and run them in the morning before work. In a couple of years when I retire, Ill be able to get serious with it. I've got one guy that will give me $10.00 each "fresh out of the trap". I've got a couple more folks that will give $15.00 for the larger coons, and $5 for smaller ones. When I run my traps in the morning, I call my contact on the way out of the woods, and he meets me at work and picks them up. On the weekends I call a couple more guys that will come to my house and get them. They prefer them "whole, fresh out of the trap". Since fur not worth much down here, that's really my best option.
