I caught 20 coyotes in a 16 square mile area of fish farms and cropfields. Is this number of yotes(1.2ish per sq mile) about the average density in the south? Or anywhere? Just curious what yall thought here on trapperman

That would be a very thick density up here. It changes with the amount of open farmland here. And in the heavily wooded areas, there will be wolves, which also changes coyote density .

Spot I have two farms up here in the foothills of the Ouachitas that very greatly on coyote numbers. These farms are about five miles apart along the Arkansas River. In the past two years (not this year no coyote trapping for me) I've caught three coyotes on one farm and eight on the other. These on 10-14 day sets. Strange how it works but my guess is food supply. In your country however I bet that many coyotes per square mile is about average.

Thanks for the replies. Told an owner of one property what coyotes were taken and he thought i only scratched the surface because "there's a ton of coyotes out there"

Food and habitat.
That’s why the Midwest and parts of the “east” have a lot of coyotes.
People think “the west” is full of coyotes, it is, kind of. But the densities are low as it’s endless prime habitat with little to no food in it.
I figure one coyote per two sections a high population here. Usually figure on one family group per township (36 square miles).
Of course, find the food, and you may find every coyote for 10-15 miles in a small area.

Thanks for the replies. Told an owner of one property what coyotes were taken and he thought i only scratched the surface because "there's a ton of coyotes out there" Close to high populations of livestock the numbers of yotes goes thru the roof. I have a spot where 15-20 can be caught every year in a 100 yard area. Its where they used to bury dead cattle. It’s crazy how many check that same area every year. 5 years ago, when they where still burying cattle there. I caught 19 coyotes, 1 red, and “Moses” the farm dog in the same Bridger #3. If I remember right that was over a 30-40 day period. I think in my area 2/square mile is a good number.

Your density of coyotes is higher than 1.2 coyotes per sq mile. This number represents your catch per sq mile..not the density.
In the south, at least down my way, coyotes don't congregate in those western high numbers around livestock areas. Will there be some there? Yes, but not catching 20 or 30 off just a few acres. There is more prey amd food in the east and south so every coyote for miles dont have to pull in there.
16 sq miles is over 10 thousand acres. I've had catch rates almost double your 1.2 coyotes per sq mile... but the next winter the rate would be less than half. I trap huge tracts of timberland and have looked at the numbers over time. 1.2 per sq mile shows you are a very respectable coyote trapper.

Here find the deer you'll find coyotes. Especially in winter. The deer camp close to the food source and the coyotes do too.. So far in one 100 acre spot Ive taken 15 close to frozen marsh where the deer a grouped. But thats most of the coyotes for that township. Alot of the Ag. gets plowed so its a virtual desert. So it congregates the prey and predators. Most years its 2 per square but this year 1 may be closer. Lots of backfill here during breeding, I'll call it the winter shuffle. Sign showing up where its been void for months prior. People here a howl they think theirs 40 but there's just 2 LOL..

I heard or read one time that they will come 15 miles to dead piles and feed yards out here, and then fill back in within just a few months after trapping has stopped. I think Bob (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) said that, but can’t remember. It seems to be the only explanation to me. Kinda like a black hole in space. What do you think?

Swamp wolf, thanks for the compliment.
Pawnee, where i am at, i dont think are many coyote trappers. I trap my area then the yotes fill back in from the surrounding land.
