Coyote lotation is something i seem to struggle, or atleast how to set it up. I can catch coyotes, but not consistantly. I can find tracks and scat, on the field edges and field crossings. I set them, but i may or may not catch. Could someone elaborate more on what to look for or where to look for coyote sign? And also how to set up certain types of sign?

I have poor luck with footholds but i find tracks through brush, set cable restraints, and catch coyotes pretty easy that way

I'm far from an expert, but the locations in my area that are working for me and the guys I'm trapping with are pond dams, roads, whether they're connecting fields, or going through cut overs, the tops or bottoms of draws in a field, and in bigger fields the drainage ditches going the length of the field, especially when there's a change in the height of corn stubble. These are pretty much the major features that our coyote travel. I normally put in at least two sets, sometimes three, varying between different sized dirt holes, flat sets, 2, 3 or 4 hole sets, bone and grab and die sets.

I'm sure what y'all's terrain is like is vastly different from what we have here, so I don't know if y'all even see any of the features like we have.

Don’t second guess yourself to much. When I enter a new property I pretend I’m hunting whatever might be there. Just take a few minutes at the entrance and look. Maybe it’s the sharp corner at the edge of a field. Maybe a 2 trac along a row of trees. Maybe a trash or rock pile. In my area it might be the nice curve from a wheat drill on the edge of a field that has some weeds by it, or grass waterway that has 100 acres of fresh wheat on each side. I always set on scat. Don’t beat yourself up to much. In my experience there is no such thing as consistently when trapping yotes. I would add that I get in the bad habit of not trying new locations on ground I’ve trapped for years. Maybe it’s because I get lazy, or afraid to try something new. I set a new spot on ground I’ve trapped for 20 years. I caught 2 there and none at the old catch sites. Most importantly don’t think that the rest of us are getting 10 a night, because we aren’t.

I am kind of the same boat here , have an area about two hundred acres of woods with dirt lanes through out it.
Set on scat/track sign either a dirt hole or flat set and a urine post on the other side depending on wind direction.
May go couple days nothing then fresh scat in road way or possum/coon in set have caught bobcats there but no coyotes.
There is lot of coyote sign in area.

Thanks guys!

What about trapping them in timber? Ive never specifically chased yotes in timber. I know they run the timber on deer trails and other trails, but I do not know how to set it up.

Roads, rows, ridges and where any of those come together.
Look for terrain boundaries like major interstates or railroads

What kind of terrain are you trapping? Crop, timber, or pasture?

If you are setting sign on crop edges your coyote catches are going to be hit and miss. If it's a main travel route through crop ground you can have consistent catches but those travel routes can be hard to find in crop ground sometimes.

If you have permission in pastures close to crop ground get in them and set on sign. Pastures are coyotes travel routes to get to their hunting ground. So they take the same path frequently. Making catches more consistent. When in hunting grounds(crop edges)they are all over the place. Sometimes following edges sometimes not.

I'm not saying give up those field edge sets but get on them travel routes in pastures and see if it makes a difference.

Intersections of 2 tracks and trails. Around brush piles and where trails out of timber meet open ground or CRP. Also the first high spots in timber out of marshes.
Look at the geography of the locations that produce then duplicate.

Pinch points..
