I'm looking at adding a few more predator lures to my bag before next years and the list is basically....endless.

Is there something in the description you look for when selecting a lure or is it "lucky guess" when you find one?

I am trying to catch fox, bobcat, and coyotes. I currently have Carman's Red Fox Gland, Carman's Coyote gland and hawbaker wildcat #1. I used the "guess" method....Just curious if there is more to it or what you look for in selecting a lure.

Well...I try to match the calendar and weather with my lures to some extent. In coyote "rut" (January/February) I use a lot more coyote gland lure. If it is really cold I might switch up to something skunky or loud like Fox Hollow Bounty Hunter/Violator7. And if I have multiple sets on the same property some of it is just about change up. I try to give them some different just to keep them guessing a little bit. Some of it is also about the set itself...if it is a set post I might use a good rub lure or may use something like Cat Collector or Cat-Man-Do if I am targeting a bobcat. It doesn't mean you can't catch a coyote there depending on location. I do not feel like there is a "best" lure but I think there are probably better lures for some situations. That said if I had to only use one lure for life it would be Fox Hollow GH2. I am not saying it is the best or even better.. but I just associate it with catching a lot of coyotes and fox. I have re-lured many sets with it that were initally lured with something else weeks earlier and have a coyote in there in 48 hours. Maybe coincidence..I have no idea.

Thanks for info, CT. I guess maybe that is my question: How do you tell what is “skunky and loud” or “not skunky and quiet” or a “good rub lure” or good for dirt hole sets, etc. trial and error??

When you are ordering make sure you read the descriptions carefully. F and T does a good job on their site. But some of the lure makers go into a better description on their own website and some of them you can call or message. Lesel Reuwsatt is always very good about getting back to me on questions about specific lures and baits through his Facebook page. He can also give me his opinion on best application. Of course I have to keep in mind he is South Dakota and I am in Louisiana and their are obvious weather differences. But I would venture to say very little difference in coyotes. On gland lure I would say any of it from a reputable maker is going to be good stuff. I have had good luck with Andy Weiser's but I am not saying it is better. If you want skunky I don't think anybody reading this thread would argue with Gusto. But if you have not used it beware it is very strong. It doesn't take much and my mail carrier has asked me on more than one occasion to let him know what day I expect it so he can put in a trash bag and seal it up. It's strong enough you can smell it in a sealed and taped bottle through a box. One of my favorite change ups is Clint's Boss Dog. It has a sweet smell that cats seem to like equally with coyotes. It is very similar to Cat Collector from Clint and it might even be the same. You already have some good change up lures from your paragraph above. But get a bottle of Fox Hollow GH2 and try it...you can't go wrong with it unless you use too much. Just a q-tip dab is all you need. A bottle can last forver.

One should always have some beaver castor based lure in their bag when trapping cats/canines.
Anything listed as "call lure" or has "skunk" in it i use up high to catch the air currents to draw in predators toward the set.
