One of my boys wants to try this out. So, here we are. Was looking at this to start with:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/15-piece-fox-Co...McAAOSw3gJZJGVQ

What do you think? I thought the price was good. but not sure of quality. What else is needed to start with? Or are we better off to piece together what we need.

If you could start over knowing what you know now, what would your must haves be?

Thank you in advance....

It will get him out of the house, and out side doing things on his own. This start up kit, is a small price to pay to see what kind of man he is going to be in the years to come. If he likes trapping he will get more things that he will need to in large his trap line.

2 important tools not included in that kits are a trowel (shovel) and a sister. I know there is a set on eBay that includes those for not a lot more. Trapping is a lot of fun and any youth that is wanting to get involved should be encouraged. It beats the alternative these days. Good clean healthy fun...

Wish I had more time to trap....

For new trappers it might be better to start on dumber animals before taking on smart ones. Coon, muskrat, etc are more geared to newbies. With those he's likely to catch something. Fox and yote aren't what you want to start out on.

I started half way through the season with the F&T coyote starter kit. While it came with everything for me to set those half dozen dukes the addiction set in FAST. Soon had an order in again, more traps, more bait/lure, etc. it looks like a nice kit there on eBay but I’ve noticed F&T and other trapping sites offer starter kits at matching or better prices than eBay and Amazon. Hope your boy goes head over heels for trapping like I did. Goodluck!

I would agree with the advice above to start out with an easier type of quarry. Even catching good eating rabbits is a good way to learn and also experiment putting up fur. I bet a a big bunch of trappers on here started out on gophers as a kid like I did. Good to learn to bed traps in summer dirt as well. For gophers it's not necessary but doing it teaches.

Read a lot of posters here, hard pounding guys who struggle a long time to catch their first canine. With children it's about action that keeps the interest up. Catching ANY fur keeps it fun.

YouTube has been a wealth of information for me as far as making sets and seeing people bed traps. Easier to lean watching someone in my opinion.

Good advice on better prices at trapping supply for starter kits. I respectfully disagree on easier species. The fox in the east may be super ninja smart. But I'll bet that in S.D. they are as dumb as they are here. Dirt hole with some bait down in it, 1.75 with center of pan 6~8" properly bedded in front of hole = Fox. maybe skunk, either way the journey begins. Good luck and good for you on getting the kids out on the land. You will need a sifter and pan covers, or something under the pan to keep the sifted dirt from propping up the pan, crushed wax paper works for pan cover and can be used under the trap to help reduce freeze down. A trowel for the bed and dirt hole. Hammer for driving the anchors in. If you use a framing hammer the claw side will help a lot with digging the trap bed. A two dollar flour sifter or spaghetti drainer will work, use your imagination. Have fun and keep it simple. Research the archives on here, lot of masters sharing knowledge that they gathered over the years. Go get them.

P.S. if you see a road kill skunk that isn't smashed to bad pick it up. Very good bait for fox. Feral cats also good. Even jackrabbits.

That is how I got started, I bought a starter pack on ebay mine had a had a towel and 6 traps to start with. Now I have about 80 traps, still using what came in the kit. that was 3 seasons ago. I bit of a warning you start buying you wont stop...

Good luck. I agree wit the guys who say start them out on easier stuff to catch. A few DP traps makes raccoon trapping easy to be successful. Checking empty traps is no fun for kids. Get them hooked ten they can take it as far as they want.

His confidence will grow quicker with coon and DPs. But some kids do have a nack for yotes and fox. My son would have non of that small stuff. Caught the first 5 yotes that season. Taught him how to bed a trap and away he went. Coyotes love him, they just tolerate me..

This is my second year and I wish I had started years ago, I started out after coyotes and bobcats. Caught a few coins and opossum first but then I caught my first bobcat and I've been hooked every since. Check out FnT before you buy and see what starter packs they have. Good luck, I'm now taking my kids and they love it
