First year trapping I've trapped 2 months. Caught 2 reds, 1 grey, 4 coon. No luck with commercial bait at all.... Caught everything with squirrels and geese carcasses in dirt holes, With the exception of one post set. We have 10" of snow and 9 days left of the season, I'm not snare certified.

Any advice on good sets to use

Your doing better than I am, I've caught 2 coyotes, 1 coon, 5 possum, 6 grey squirrel, and 1 skunk since November with about 4 dozen footholds in the ground. I have tried just about everything I can think of including no less than a dozen different lures and baits, urine, bacon grease, and have just had horrible luck. This PA weather this year has really worked against us though. I have walked up on several sets this year where it looked like foxes, fishers, cats and coyotes have tap danced on my traps but they were froze in, even when bedded in peat and salt. I have rotated traps, adjusted placement, tried different areas, set on sign, adjusted my guiding and freeze proofing. I have read and researched to no end and the point of obsession. The animals are there it's just been a crappier year than normal.

I have had good luck this year with the compass set. I believe there is a thread on it here somewhere. I make it as a true flat set with no backing on any of the 4 holes. I put my holes all about 9" in each direction off the center of the pan on 45s and blend the trap well. I have caught 3 coyotes in it but 6-7 grey fox. I make my holes very small. Like maybe a 50 cent piece in diameter. I like it because they are not keying in on any sort of backing at all. It's a true walk through. But I have caught about 50% on back foot...not that that matters. I am guessing they are just missing the trap on the front.

Compass set sounds great, but will it still be affective covered in snow?

Hay sets are made for snow... Don't overdue it with hay on the trap..

Sorry...I missed the 10" of snow part. I am Louisiana...so I know way more about 10' of rain rather than snow. But if you can keep the trap from freezing down I dont know why it wouldn't work. I can even see doing the compass set in some scattered hay.
